Spa emptying when selecting spa

Thanks I’ve added comments —— Here are all the spa pictures in this thread...

The above picture is the results of the pool guy not turning on the switch on the side of the automated Hayward valve

This is normal pool mode pump running the only one where water comes out

Spa running and emptying at the same time when the Hayward automated switch on the side was off

img_4380-jpeg.618339

Same as above spa would empty whilst running due to pool guy not turning the switch on at the side of the Hayward automatic divertor

Spa draining down

The very beginning was
One of the automated diverters was leaking and the pool pump stopped working from the top so I asked the pool guy to change, he then forgot to turn the two of them back on so the spa would empty when in spa mode. I flicked the switches on both so they both moved together but now when the spa is off it drains down

Back in October the very beginning is a Below picture when I had the pool pump stop working and the same pool guy came out to replace the pump and the spa divertor seal leaving them switches off and the spa looks like it has drained down in this picture also

This is the only good spa drain down AM picture.

I am looking for where the water level is just below the jet opening as that indicates the pipe the water stopped flowing out of.

Only one jet is visible in this picture, and I drew a line where the water level is above the jet. Either the water has not stopped draining out yet, or this jet is not the problem.

I am wondering if this is the level the spa drains to by the morning and if it would drain more if you let it and did not turn on the pump in POOL mode.

We now know that you have two return pipes into the spa:
  • Spa Jets
  • Spa Spillover
We do not know which of those pipes this check valve is in.

We may need to figure that out.

But I first want to determine which pipe the water is leaking out from. Then we can figure out how the water is draining back into the pool.

The above one is for the spa spill which is labeled pool over which is now turned OFF as below

I had the pump off for 2 days and it stayed at this level during as I was performing the bucket test in the pool and no water emptied from the pool during the time it was off.

That is why I need to see the water level at all the jets and along the entire spa walls when the spa water is stabilized. I cannot determine anything from that picture.

Is the water level of the spa now the same as the pool?

Both are 11 inches from the top to the water at the deep end of the pool and in the spa so they are now level

Well, that is an inclusive science experiment. It confirmed that your spa is siphoning into your pool, but we still don't know which path the water is taking.

I would buy these return line plugs...

Your 5 eyeball fittings unscrew from your spa, and you can screw these plugs in. Then you can remove one or more plugs and see which combinations hold water and when the spa leaks down. This should tell us which pipes the spa is leaking from.

The other thing I think you to figure out is if that check valve is in the spa jet line or the spillover line. We can discuss ways to figure that out.

Your spa draining down into the pool nightly is not a leak and is not a major problem.

Nothing will be damaged if your spa drains down nightly, and then in the morning, the spillover refills the spa for the day.

I am happy to continue working with you to find out what is siphoning, or you can accept that is the way your pool works.

Hi AJW I have the plugs on hand already and can plug the spa then remove one at a time.

Do you think I have a leak as I’m filling the pool once a week an inch

Also do you think I have another check valve on the other return or in line after the pump

Great. Do that and report what you observe.

I doubt it. Every sign is you have siphoning back to the pool.

In the winter, when the pool water temperature is higher than the air temperature, especially at night, there can be evaporation.

Also do you think I have another check valve on the other return or in line after the pump

You should but I do not know if you do. That is one of the things that should be figured out.

Hi AJW ok, there is no check valve on the second pipe. I’m going to let dogs lie as this may be by design and was able to find a photo from a year ago of the spa and it was draining down then.

The weather has been weird in north Florida with hot and cold spells and 75 percent humidity and not much rain. Perhaps I need to figure out how much water I need to be adding based on the size of my pool which is a lap pool. Have to change gears as the pool heater isn’t working and figures crossed it’s low on Freon

Hi AJW old thread and I’m back on the pool maintenance getting ready for summer. Quick question 1. is there anywhere I could add a check valve to stop the water emptying out of the spa when the pump isn’t running over night or as we experienced using the spa
2. Last night it drained over the spill way as we were getting in and out and didn’t refill whilst the pump was on ?

You were going to use plugs to determine which line the spa was draining from.

You ever do that? See post 116.

Losing water over the spillway is normal when people get into the spa.

It will not refill until you go back to pool mode.
