Soon to be new pool owner - Basic Questions

Siphoning effect

How would the vacuum work without the pump going? I thought there won't be any skimmer suction. Did I misunderstand something?

Thanks

Same concept just larger body of water.

So thanks for all of the advice and tips. A good deal of update since my last post. I was able to get and add in the DE as instructed and it has definitely helped with the fine particles. Additionally, I found the technique of brushing the settled fine dust towards the main drain really did help to get those into the filter. Also having a skimmer sock and cleaning it often has helped as well.

My water numbers are solid at this point at 4 for chlorine and have been stable with PH at 7.2 with minimal effort

The g3 simply would not work for a variety of reasons. I tried changing the diaphragm with no improvement it just kept getting stuck in the same place so I opted to get a dolphin m400 from Marinas at a decent price with no tax.

The bad news is that the dolphin arrived looking used. It was not in an M400 box it was in a large big in parts that looked like it was just thrown in and not packed well at all.

It has a crack in one of the wheel hubs, large scrapes in the actual sides of the wheels, and the caddy where the power supply sits has cracks. The white Teflon rollers on the treads of the actual unit look like it has been horribly compressed/damaged. I called Marina's Pool and Spa immediately and on request sent them pictures and now when I call back it seems like they not answering my calls. The previous times I called before reporting this issue they answered right away. I don't want to be impatient but I would expect a call back fairly quickly given the 1 person I spoke to yesterday seemed surprised that what I received was not double boxed and was in the state it was when it arrived. The box itself shows no sign of damage so it clear the item was shipped in the state it was in when I received it.

I am all for getting a decent price and saving on tax but if this is what you get its just not worth the minimal savings for the $1000 purchase.

Does anyone have any advice?

Send them an email with pics and full write up that includes time, day and who you talked to on the phone and what they said. Make sure to include when you called back but got no answer. Facts only. No emotion or "I think/feel" kinds of sentences.

This gets it all in writing if you need it later. Let us know how it goes.

I am glad the water is clearing up and the balancing is good!

Thanks I finally just got an email back and had a conversation it looks like they are going to work to resolve the issue. They ran the serial and said its not a refurbished unit so I can use it and they will send replacement parts for those that are damaged.

I did have a question related to my filter in the pool so since adding in the DE early last week my pressure has been slowly creeping up higher and higher the original norm for this pool seemed to be about 15 since we moved in. After adding the DE it has steadily increased and just today was up over 24 and there very little movement in the skimmer so I ran a backflush and it is back down to 17 and the skimmer is back to normal.

Do I need to add more DE in at this point to help filter. Is there anything else I should do, perhaps a deep clean of the filter is needed?

Thanks again!

They are going to send PARTS? okay...............but your bought a new one so............you should be getting a new unit in my eyes. Have you looked at the filter screens/bags to see if they show any signs up prior use?

A slightly dirty sand filter works better as the stuff will help grab the small stuff. The pressure going up was the DE at work! Good job DE! I would add some more and see how the clearing goes for another week. Just keep an eye on the pressure. If it goes 25% over your clean pressure then it is time to backwash again. If you are liking how clear the pool is next weekend then go ahead and deep clean it. If you think it could clearer then wait another week.

What is clear? Well there is clear and then there is TFP clear. TFP is where you can read a quarter at the bottom of the deep end. Is it heads or tails? At night when the water is still does it look like gin?

I'm with Kim. I would box up the cleaner and send it back and tell them to send you a new one or give you a credit.

Yeah most of the damaged parts seem to mainly just be the caddy. The cleaner itself does have some minor scuffs and scratches on the surface but nothing that seems to look too terrible. There is definitely some grit and particles on the heavy duty filter screen. It did not look dirty but it did not look brand new either. I will keep you posted how that all works out. I am still reluctant to use it even though they said it was ok to. I may just try it out tomorrow and let it run around the pool anyway.

So even though the pressure had jumped up since adding the original 1.5 cups of DE its OK to add more after a backflush?

The only reason I ask is that when I noticed the pressure up so high today the skimmer suction and pool flow was seriously reduced and it started clouding up again on the deep end which is why I backflushed. It seems to have gone a little in the wrong direction clarity wise with the filter clogging up I guess. Is that normal for it to cloud up again so quickly?

I read the notes adding DE and saw that when you backflush you lose some of it but still wanted to check to make sure it was ok.

Thanks again for the help.

Update on the m400 they are swapping it out for a new one. I opted to move up to the m500 mainly for the longer cleaning cycles and the pool rim only mode.

I also added in a little more de to help and it definitely getting pretty clear.
