So confused about plaster start up

If the true TA is really 25ppm, then your pH would probably be much lower. But pool stores tend to good up the TA test by adjusting the results artificially low. =

As you noted, Pool Stores often report an adjusted alkalinity by subtracting about 1/3 of the CYA, although the CYA is 0 in the test above.

My guess is the TA would test around 60-70 with a Taylor test kit.

I am getting mixed opinions from all kinds of different people.
Danny, you need to decide who to trust and listen to. Then follow whoever's methods. That can be TFP, your Pool store, your Builder, a friend, or some other place. Mixing methods will only cause problems and confusion.

TFP has hundreds of thousands of members who follow our methods. TFP has nothing to sell you. TFP methods have been developed and proven by pool owners. Do the people in the Pool Store have a pool? Does your Pool Builder even have a pool?

It is your pool and your choice.

What is the issues with having a low alkalinity

It is the pH that determines if water is acidic.

The person at the Pool Store failed basic chemistry.

and also am I able to add any in a new plaster pool?

You were already referred to Plaster Start-Up Guides - Further Reading

NPC Start Up Card is a good general guide to follow using YOUR OWN test kit.

danny1001,

I was in the same boat past spring, my advice - read up the tutorial on this website first. And read up fast! Order the Tf100 kit and take control of your chemistry. Running to store for tests and to PB will only complicate matters for you. ajw22 and Mdragger88 are already advising you, they are the best!
