Slippery Travertine Help

Friends,
I had my pool installed 2.5 years ago and spent so much time toiling over so many details, yet one I did not, was to go with travertine. It is a honed travertine the builder recommended, not polished, but slippery, hot and has faded a lot. I am considering sealing it with a grit, which I have been told could last up to 8 years. I welcome your suggestions. It's about 1200 SQFT. Just trying to keep my family and friends alive

Safe is a good thing! Sorry to hear it has been so slippery. That is no fun at all.

So here are my thoughts with nothing based on real experience. Just what I have read..................no kind of sealing lasts for 8 yrs. so keep that in mind when you do it. Especially high traffic areas. I will reach out to a couple of people who do this kind of things for a living and see what they say.

I can appreciate the safety issues involved and agree a slippery pool deck needs to be treated. I have no direct experience but my searching finds this is a common problem.

My inlaws have done everything you can think of, grit sealer wise with no luck. He is looking into media blasting now. 2 of the 5 grands kids have had stitches because of the travertine.

We are just starting and thought travertine was supposed to be cooler than concrete pavers? We're close to you, so interested in it being hot...and slippery of course. We talked to a couple of people who have travertine and didn't feel like it was that slippery...ugh...what to do.

Mine is slick (when wet) and hot (in the summer). A few splashes takes care of the heat...but it is slippery. From the threads I have seen, it’s seems that maybe tumbled travertine might not be as slick??? We don’t do a lot of swimming, except that the grandkids are getting into it...

I used Sharkgrip added to a water based sealer when I used to seal our concrete pool deck. I found it had little effectiveness and was soon gone completely. I feel it may last longer if such a product is added to a more viscous consistency product (paint) versus a liquid-like sealer. I was sealing it to retain the water based stain. And I was trying to get some additional grip. Now I'm resigned to the grip and don't bother sealing - having let the color just fade.

Use tumbled travertine - have 1400 sq ft of it and it's not slick when wet or dry...
