SLAMming Confused: Deal w CYA First? What is “SLAM Level”?

“A swarm in May is worth a load of hay, A swarm in June, a silver spoon, but a swarm in July is not worth a fly.” That's because the later in the season the less a swarm can be prepared in terms of resources (honey, pollen, bees) for winter.
That is a neat way of saying it!

LOVE Grace and her pool and honey!

That was a NEAT video!! THANKS!

Well, Crud.

Woke up this morning to algae along the edges of the pool.

I guess I SLAM again. Getting ready to hit it with four gallons of bleach.

I was hoping we’d be able to use the pool today for Juneteenth. But I guess not.

Any ideas why this might’ve happened? Everything was looking and testing so good as of just yesterday.

Also… any thoughts on tbis ph & why the test water appears orange? What ph level would you say this is, @PoolStored ? 7.5?

Sorry to have to resurrect tbis thread in this manner. :(

Thanks.

Hey, sorry for this. Let's not just add 5 gallons.

1) Post a complete set of results.
2) Bring me back up to speed on which test kit you have.
3) That pH block is odd and color does not look right...double check that you are using the correct reagent. Validate, redo if necessary and post a pic.
4) Let's get pH figured out first, then use pool math and add enough chlorine to get you to SLAM level FC.

You are OK to swim with FC between minimum and up to SLAM level and you can see the bottom. Swim, but let's get your chems right...

Thanks, man.

I just added the 4.25 gals of bleach. The tests from this morning are up. Kit is the tf-pro.

The r-0014 was pretty much used up. I just cracked a new bottle and got the results below. Ph is off the chart.

Great MA addition, that is .4pH. Good job.

Retest pH in 30 minutes, pump on. Reduce pH in .4 increments. Test after 30 minutes, reduce again by .4. Repeat until your pH is in the 7s.

4.25 is good, that will get you just to SLAM.

High pH might bother swimmers eyes, but not dangerous...just work it down, shouldn't take long. Keep you SLAM level. Even if people swimming, just take 5-10 minute break, test FC, add chlorine, good to swim again.

One other comment on the logs...about how to manage pH.

If pH is in the 7s, leave it alone. When it gets to 8, then reduce to 7.6. If it likes to sit at 7.8 or 7.9, don't reduce it until it gets to 8.

You are in a yo-yo with baking soda/TA and MA. Follow my advice on reducing pH. Leave it in the high 7s and only reduce getting to 8. Should get you off the yo-yo.

I was feeling that, yes.

I think that bad reagent for me out of whack.

Our running errands for a bit. Will check ph again in an hour or so.

Thanks so much -

I must have read "dry stabilizer" in your logs as "dry acid" My bad.

Could be. You will be fine, get chlorine for your SLAM... ;)

Looks like ph is getting there. What would you call this? 7.8?

Wish there was a better way to test it, but no?

Something is weird the the translation of the lighting & colors on the block. Take 2 pics, one outside with white piece of paper behind, and one indoors (semi-shaded) with paper behind...

Here you go, mate. Thank you.

Purchase a pH meter. I have the Apera PH60 Works great. Need to calibrate every 3-4 months.

Just looked it up on Amazon. Not certain I’ll bite this season as we close the pool soon after Labor Day and we’re going to be out of town for a month prior to that but…

It appears one needs to purchase the sensor + solutions kit. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Just purchase the sensor. It comes with calibration fluids good for several calibrations in the future. Then you can buy a refill for the calibration solutions (at least a year later). See pict
