SLAMing the Green Monster

Correct. Once the chlorine neutralizes the ammonia based compounds and the CC is burned off by the sun, the ‘chlorine ‘ smell disappears.

If you can find the FAS-DPD reagents locally you will be very lucky. It is very rare to find without purchasing online.

Well, three pools stores later and a BUNCH of driving around Kansas City has me back in business...

TIP for anyone reading this, you will use a BUNCH of the R-0871 reagent. It isn't just enough to have a test kit, you need a TON of the R-0871 reagent. Not like a of bottle of the A size, like a bottle of the C size (60mL). I also bought more 0870 powder because I didn't want to run out. (Question for the pro's, is the amount of R-0870 you add critical, or is it just enough to get it good and pink? Reason I ask is the scooper seems highly imprecise.)

For right or wrong, when I was flying blind I kept adding bleach at the 'average' rate I had been yesterday to maintain.

Added 1 jug at 9:00am before church
Added 2 jugs at 2:30pm after church/lunch/1st pool store
Stopped at the local Aldi and bought all 9 jubs of bleach they had.
5:00pm FC 14
Added 2 jugs of 6%
Water doesn't really look any better yet.
I leave on business tomorrow afternoon, so I will get one measurement/correction in the morning and then can get one over lunch before I get on a plane.
Won't be back until Wednesday at 6:00pm.

Any tips on how to bridge something like that, or should I just waive the white flag, consider the $70 in bleach wasted and try again next weekend? (Thinking that I would have someone add a jug in the morning and one in the evening to try and keep the FC somewhat elevated.

You need to add enough R0870 powder to turn pink. One scoop for 10 ml sample is enough.

When you leave, have someone add at least the amount of liquid chlorine you were adding each day. So if you were using two jugs, have them add two jugs. Spaced out as you say is fine.

I would be lying if I wasn't doubting it a little. It takes some faith, and a lot of bleach and reagent!
Yes. Pool-Owner-Patience (POP) is a cornerstone of the SLAM Process. If you are running low on powder or drops, you can use the 5 ml water sample size. One scoop of powder and each drop equals 1 ppm of FC (i.e. 20 drops = FC of 20). It's not as accurate as the 10 ml water sample, but this early in the SLAM it may help you.
