SLAM woes

Why is my water just getting darker during my SLAM? Is this ok? I added 2 gallons last night, 2 gallons this morning, 3 gallons at 3pm and i’m about to add 3 more of chlorine. FC is at 5 right now, trying to keep it up at 20. I justIMG_1836.jpeg hope I’m not wasting all this.

What you need to do while in SLAM mode is capture as much of the iron as you can now with polyfill. The more you get out now the better. See below for a couple examples. You can also place some polyfill directly in the skimmer basket.

Get yourself a polyfill bucket. I was in the same boat. My pool went from incredibly dark brown (almost black), to gold, almost Arnold Palmer yellow, to turquoise and blue in a matter of a week.

Be mindful of your fill water source. Every time you use that same source you’ll run into iron/rust filled water - and you’ll want to get your poly bucket back into action.

I’m going on day 4 of bucket free swimming - it’s a chore but worth it in the long haul to get all the rust and iron removed!

Here’s some of my progress pics!!

does it matter if it’s right above the skimmer?
Ha. No. The important thing is what you are doing now by getting pool water through that bucket by any means possible, and it's working! Fantastic. :goodjob:

Yes, continue with the SLAM. Nothing you can do about the reaction between iron and chlorine. You must eliminate the algae first.
Follow up question :) We are about 5 days into the SLAM. Chlorine level was at 24 last night after I vacuumed the pool a couple hours after last chlorine add. This morning, FC is at 22.5 and water is still gross looking. Do I need to do something or just wait?

Also- should I be rinsing the poly fill in the bucket or just leaving it?

Also again- because of the bucket filter I’m not getting much circulation in the water. Does this matter?

Thanks again for all the help!

Yes, you can rinse the poly occasionally to remove any trapped iron. So you are basically running all the return water (from the main filter) through your polyfill bucket? Nothing out of the return jet(s)?

Can you post a new pic of the water as t looks today?

By the way, that ladder needs to come out. They are major algae traps. Sorry. :(

Aw Crud! That’s the only way we got it to stay ☹️

Yes the return hose is in the bucket. Is that not right?

Well, it's probably not ideal because you can't really circulate water very well. The water still has a lot of live algae in it and appears to be very calm (stagnant) and it would be better to see some good circulation in there from return jet(s) to skimmer. Do you folks have a separate pump of any kind available? Something like a sump pump or something you could just drop in the water to go directly to the poly-bucket? Some people will do that and run it through the poly-bucket separately from the main pump & filter line. Just something to consider.

Oh man. We may be able to borrow one. How can there still be living algae with the chlorine level so high? 😣

Then that means you little to no CYA in the water and need to add some. So I would grab some granular stabilizer and use the sock pre-soaking method to add about 30 ppm of stabilizer. If you've not done the sock method before let us know.

Without stabilizer, all the chlorine you add to the water gets burned off by the sun extremely fast preventing it from doing it's job.
