SLAM question for newbie

Earlier this week I noticed water had a tint of green and did an OCLT. Had 3.4 FC Wednesday night and 3.4 the next morning but it dipped to 1.8 by Friday afternoon. This morning I added chlorine to start the SLAM process. Current numbers:

8.5 FC
2.3 CC
5 CYA
7.7 PH
97 Alkalinity
276 calcium
58 Phosphates

Should I try to bring up my CYA or continue with the SLAM and fix later? What level of FC should I maintain throughout the SLAM given such low CYA? After adding chlorine the water is very cloudy, is this normal?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello BDN88... welcome to TFP!

How are you testing your water? It looks like a pool store results. They're usually more wrong than right.

You can not perform a SLAM process using pool store results. You must have a good test kit that contains an FAS-DPD test kit. We endorse two on the market-
The Taylor K-2006C which can usually be bought on Amazon.
The TF-100.... a better buy based on quantity of reagents you will use most. www.tftest.net

We need to know more about the pool and how you normally chlorinate?

Thanks, Maddie! The detailed test results are from a pool store, but the prior FC results from Wed-Fri were from a FAS-DPD test kit. I have an in-ground plaster pool (30,000 gal) that has a salt generator. I use the salt generator, liquid chlorine and pucks to chlorinate.

Last night using FAS-DPD test kit, FC was 9.5, <0.5CC and <30 CYA. Tests results were the same this morning so passed the overnight test. Water is still cloudy so I’ll continue with the SLAM until it clears up. Any concerns with CYA being this low while doing SLAM? Is the cloudy water expected during this process?

Hey BD and Welcome !!!

You need a 30 CYA or the sun will eat half your FC in 50 mins. The test fools the brain at 20 and below so add 15 and test to see if it's then 30. If not add 10. Add granuals to a sock suspended in front of a return and squish it occasionally. If using liquid, the bulk of the CYA is the sludge at the bottom and it's nearly impossible to get a proper dose if it's less than the gallon.

Also, how is the pollen by you ? San Fran should be popping by now, no ? Your FC has held very well for an Algae problem. Keep the FC up while we figure this out, it won't need much effort.
