SLAM process and getting rid of mustard algae😭

slcresswell, I feel your pain.! I too am battling the same problem. I have a Taylor test kit, not cheap. I even ordered another several recommended I get that had more stuff in it, but mostly just the silly magnetic speed stir thing. I sent it all back. You would think as much as they charge it would come in a decent closable lid instead of the snap lid that won't close. Sorry, I got carried away there with my frustration at the situation. Anyway, I just wanted you to know you are not alone with doing everything "right" and it still not working.
I wish you the best of luck at getting your pool water straight.!
I gave up. It cleared up a bit after a week and half but I’m just done messing with it. Water is clear and I will just have to deal with the scattered spots that come back. I was hopeful the SLAM would work after everyone sung it’s praise, but I am not doing it for weeks and weeks. And I am not spending more money on test kit supplies due to the amount of testing. Between that and chlorine and my time and frustration, I haven’t even got to just enjoy the pool for the past month. Moving on now, going to enjoy it for the next few weeks and hope for the best when we open it next year.

You can't. You need to test several times a day to perform the process. What, do you plan to waltz in to the pool store several times per day for days, getting free testing, and leaving?
Ironically, I bought a pool at the end of the summer last year. This was our first summer. I had no clue about pools. ZERO. I just thought all pools were crystal clear. I found this forum and INYO forum and learned about SLAM. My pool was filthy black. I was told to SLAM, definitely not what the pool store wanted to do. My wife wanted to listen to the pool store, and not some random stranger on the Internet. I told her, I'm listening to Rich. I trust him wholeheartedly. She gave an ultimatum if the pool wasn't ready by July 1st, she's going to slash the liner and put an end to our pool.

I sh-t you not, I went to the pool store 2-3 times and had the water tested during the SLAM process. Walked in, walked out. I was in panic mode, I had no other choice. Fast forward, the SLAM process worked...it took 22 days. After things settled down, I went to their pool school to learn a bit, and the lady that has run it said, half jokingly....we might have to change our free water testing policy because of you. I didn't realize those 'discs' cost them money.

I had the Taylor kit, but it was way too confusing for me, and the store is right around the corner. Fast forward to now....I couldn't imagine owning a pool WITHOUT a Taylor 2006c Kit. I only use liquid chlorine, test nightly, pour chlorine daily. Haven't had a problem since.
