Should I replace the Bulb in my UV unit?

Some years ago, many really knowledgeable folks on TFP came to the conclusion that since you need chlorine anyway (because there is no residual sanitation out to the pool), there is no point in trying to justify the cost of a UV system.

That said, I hope none of us here would assume to tell you how to manage your own pool. The forum wide goal here is to provide factual information and let you decide what works best for you.

Mmmmm. I just noticed that my UV light blow out and the pool store told me that it will cost me about $100 to replace it. I, honestly, don't even know what the UV light does. I've never really paid much attention to it. I just noticed that the light wasn't on at night and I thought I'll give the pool store a call about it. Well, I decided to open the UV system itself and noticed that the light bulb looked like it was blown out. Now, I don't really want to get a new UV light bulb because I REALLY DON'T know what the UV system does for me.

Should I replace the light bulb for my UV system? I'm really struggling with this. I mean, doesn't Liquid Chlorine (amongst other chemical balances) do the work of keeping your pool algae free? Why should I pay $100 on a light bulb that MAY NOT really be keeping my pool sanitized? Or is it?

TFP believes their is no need for a UV system in a residential, out door pool.

Thanks for the link Marty. Yeah! I'm not replacing it then cause there's really no need from reading the link. I wish I found TFP before I installed my pool cause I would have never had them install the UV system and it would have saved me a bunch of money. The pool store told me I needed it and I thought I did. Ugh. So yeah!!! I'm not replacing the light bulb. Thanks again Marty.
