Shock or not to shock

As long as the chlorine is below shock level, you should be ok.

PoolMath says your pool holds about 1800 gallons.

So if we put 1800 into PoolMath, and target FC of 3 with current value of 0, we get 8.0oz of bleach. So you can add 8.0oz, and go swimming. :)

Tomorrow, it will likely be 0 again, but your test should help you with that. Once you add stabilizer, your target chlorine level will go up, but PoolMath will tell you what you need to add. Be aware that 3ppm of chlorine with no stabilizer might be a bit harsh on your bathing suit - make sure it rinse it will with clean tap water after you get out (and I'd avoid wearing a nice one today). Once the stabilizer is in, the chlorine will be far less harsh.

Granulated CYA does dissolve slowly unfortunately but we still feel it is the best option for getting stabilizer in the water. Put in a regular tube sock and jump in the water and just start squeezing it like it’s a stress ball and it will work its way into water.

This method is quicker than the alternative of using trichlor pucks. Pucks can dissolve even slower. Dichlor “shock” could be an option I suppose. You would need to keep track how much you put in and stop using it once your CYA level gets to the desired amount.

If you're going to use bleach to chlorinate your pool, then yes. Use PoolMath to find out how much CYA it will take to go from 0 to 30ppm, put it into a sock and soak the sock while kneading it with your hands. Do not leave the CYA in contact with the side of the pool.
