OK quick question, I have been slamming my pool for a week solid and I cannot get the cloudiness to go away so I decided to check the sand in my filter. Is this what it is supposed to look like ? I have just moved into the house and this is my first time owning a pool

Welcome to the forum!

Does not look like sand. Is it one of those 'better than sand' products? I have heard about glass beads, Zeosand, etc. There have been posts with folks that could not rid the pool of cloudiness that had one of the alternative medias and when changed to sand, it cleared right up. But that is anecdotal.

Good luck!

That stuff looks lightweight and fluffy. Is it heavy and dense like you would expect like from a handful of sand at a playground?

It should look more like this photo.

Also be aware that a cloudy pool is very nearly always an algae bloom. It just has not shown itself on the walls or floor yet.

How are you testing your water? Do you have test results? How are you chlorinating your water?

I have a Taylor 2006 kit and I use liquid chlorine and my pool has been at 13 or above for the last six days my shock level is 10 with my Cya being at 30

Great. Have you done a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test? FYI -- follow this [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA] for FC levels.

Take care.

I would say that is not what sand should look like! I would switch that stuff out for #20 silica pool filter sand (avoid Quickcrete brand filter sand if possible).
Curious as to why not Quickcrete brand. I used it in my filter and haven't had a single problem. I know the sand that comes from my Quickcrete plant comes from the local sand pits and is bagged right there.

We have had verified reports of the Quickcrete brand not being consistent in size. Some times too small and ends up back in pool, sometime too big and lets stuff flow right on through.

That "sand" kinda looks like the green sand they sell as a way to get rid of iron in pool water.
