Sand filter questions

Got a Hayward S310T that has the same sand for 22 years.
Pool still looks good but was considering doing a deep clean.
Is this sand still ok to use?
I have read some posts about cleaning with diatamacious earth but can't find how.
Is there instructions somewhere if this is possible?

Your sand is still fine. Just follow our Deep Cleaning a Sand Filter page for details on how to do that deep clean and you should be good. The DE is only needed to help provide a slightly better filtering capability. Not always used, but some like it.

Add DE to a Sand Filter

A clean pool filter will increase the efficiency of your pool! ... your filter are to backwash it, clean the manifolds and grids, and add new DE.
