Gauge pressure down to 6psi from a normal 10 to 12 and sand in my pool...does that mean my filter is going bad?

Any "tests" or quick fixes available?

Big job or home repair?

Thanks

Depends on what was done to it prior to this happening, but could be a lateral that's given up. Is it really old?

Here's a very through thread on filters. Might be helpful. Every chance you can DIY the repair with a bit of effort. Sand can be vacuumed out and saved in a clean wheelbarrow or the like for re-use. Laterals can be replaced or the entire stem.

Filter is on its 8th season, this happened on opening the pool. The SWCG gave up as well.

My biggest worry is that installation was done with no unions, so disassembly is going to suck.
