Salt startup and levels

If you started at 30 and added about 40 more, use the FC target range for CYA 70.
Never let your FC get down to minimum. Plan to keep FC at the higher end of target range for your CYA.

So quick question about salt level. My SWCG says 3000ppm , but my manual salt test says 2400 ppm (12 drops). Why is there such a difference? My pool seems to be making adequate chlorine . My FC went from 5.5-8.5 just from chlorinator today turning it back on for the first time.

Shouldn’t my Salt test with the TF-Pro test be accurate?

Your TFPRO salt test is accurate. The Hayward Aquarite method of calculating salinity varys widely and is sometimes inaccurate.

As long as the SWG is happy and generating your salt level is fine.

This is what’s so confusing. All the stuff I have read says you want a salt level in the 3000ppm range. But my pool is making chlorine too much. I had it at 40% for 6 hours and my FC went from 8.5 to 12.5 today. The day before when I turned the Chlorinator back on it went from 5.5 to 8.5.

Should I turn it off or down further again? Using pool math didn’t work for my settings for it.

Turn down the SWG %.

Don’t become a slave to the robot. PoolMath gets you into the ballpark then you need to adjust the % up or down as necessary based on your test results. PoolMath cannot get the feedback from testing you get.

If the swcg is creating 2.3 ppm FC per day, you can’t gain 4 ppm. Something is not right.

My FC was 8.5 yesterday. My SWCG ran today from 7:30a- 1:30pm at 40%. I checked FC tonight and got 12.5 as my level. I just checked again… 25 drops … so 12.5. Where do you think it is going wrong?

Are TFPro test reagents bad/wrong? I am performing the tests correctly. The kit is only months old . Should I check with strips ? Take to pool store? My chlorinator said yesterday 3000ppm. Today it said 2800 ppm. My salt levels yesterday were 2400ppm from test. Should I test the CYA level. Haven’t tested that since I added it on Sunday. Was going to wait until weekend as was suggested to me . Any help would be appreciated. I turned the % down to 30% and run time from 7:30-12pm. Think that is enough?

You have a very big cell with a small pool and small changes in your SWG % or daily runtime can have big changes in FC generation.

The pool volume may be overstated. Do your acid additions test correctly?
My pool volume is what the pool company told me it is. Not sure how to verify that. What do you mean by my acid additions test correctly? I haven’t rechecked the CYA because you said to wait a week to test it. Should I retest today?

I don’t understand how to do this chemical test and it seems super time consuming. The instructions say if the alkalinity is low, add 5lbs of sodium bicarbonate if your pool is 15000 gallons to 30,000. My pool is only 7800 gallons supposedly. How much would I add if low. At what level would I want to add ?

My pool is rectangle. Is the pool volume likely to be way off what pool builder told me? Any other suggestions besides doing this chemical test to get my FC correct with my Salt cell?

Next time you need to lower the pH, add enough acid to lower the pH by 0.4 using Poolmath. Circulate the pool really well, brush it if possible. Test the pH after about 30 minutes. See if the pH matches what was expected.

Ok. I will try that next time I need to at acid. I turned mg Salt cell down to 30% and ran it from 7:30-11:30. My FC dropped from 12.5 to 12. Should I Iower salt cell settings further?

I can’t know my pH until the FC gets below 10. I usually need to add muriatic acid every day or 2 (at least before I added the CYA).

so I didn’t test my chlorine level for a couple of days and left the SWG at 30% for 4 hours and my chlorine level is 15. 2 days ago it was 12, the day before 12.5. What do you recommend? Turn the Dang thing off. For 2-3 days and restart at 20% when it reaches 7?
