Hi everyone,
I recently had my pool resurfaced and re-tiled in October and now we need to have the deck resurfaced as the previous owners just painted the deck and now it’s all stripping away, and some of the concrete around the spa cap appears to be degrading. I am very very anxious and nervous, however, that the process of resurfacing the deck will negatively impact the pool in some way. We have all glass tile and im
Also worried about them cracking or popping off while they grind away at the concrete (or whatever it is they do). Has anyone had their decks resurfaced after a replaster? Any negative impact on the pool? Anything I should look out for or ask the contractor? We should have had them done at the same time but when the pool looked old the deck didn’t bother us. Now that the pool is new the deck is driving me crazy to look at! Thank you!!

It looks like you have cantilevered coping. Make sure your deck builder knows how to properly keep the deck structure properly cantilevered and not connected to the pool structure.

Figure out how you will cover the pool or keep debris and concrete dust and dirt out fo the pool water. Or you will have a big cleanup to do in your pool when they are done.

Show us pics of how your pool water tile connects with the overhanging deck.

thanks for your reply! One of the companies that came out said they cover the pool completely, the one we are thinking of going with said they place plastic tape over the tile and ask a pool service company to come clean the pool once the messy stuff is over. I’m guessing I can ask him to cover the entire pool? I didn’t know that’s what the coping is called but I looked it up and it looks correct. Here are some pics of the coping and tile

Did you install the blue waterline tile when you replastered the pool?

Do you have any pics showing your old tile?

I can’t tell for sure if there is a gap between the top of your tile and your deck in the old pics. It looks like there is but may just be a shadow. There should be a gap.

In your new tile the line between the tile and deck is filled. Is that grout or white mastic? If it is grout that is not correct with cantilevered coping. The pool and deck are two separate structures who need to be able to move separately. Connected like that will cause tiles to crack as the deck moves.

the pics I posted where from the area that the deck had lifted up away from the pool and caused a big gap. The Concrete lifted away as we had a huge palm tree next to the pool, but we removed the tree now. We removed the tree beforere redoing the pool. I just happened to have those pics on hand but I’ll take one now of a different portion of the pool.

It’s not grout. It’s a silicone I believe to fill the gap

It should be flexible mastic like Deck-O-Seal or Sikaflex, not silicone.

The deck guys will need to carefully separate the deck from the tile where they join.
