Replacement cartridge doesn't fit over pipe due to support ring in middle

Summary: I bought a replacement cartridge filter, but it has a plastic "core support" ring that my old one didn't. Not sure if I should break that ring or buy a different filter, but if so not sure what type.

Longer story: Recent(ish) new homeowner. I needed to replace the cartridge filter since the old was worn. The old one had the model number -- a Unicel 7472 -- so I bought the same one. Turns out that the replacement one has a plastic support ring down the center column, which reduces the diameter of the pipe that can fit through. I can't fit the filter down over the return pipe in the filter. The previous filter doesn't have the plastic ring: I'm assuming the homeowner removed it but can't know for sure.

This has me wondering whether or not this is even the right cartridge filter for my filter at all. Sadly I can't find many details about my filter. The sticker says "Mytilus FRP" but otherwise contains no identifying details (picture). Googling that model brings up almost no results (most are results for "Mytilus FMY"), but it does bring up the sig of a user here which contains "Mytilus FRP Pac-Fab C-7699". I have no idea if the appropriate filter would be a C-7699 or not. I feel like I've hit a dead end here.

Just not sure what the right path forward is. Do I break the plastic ring in the middle? Do I buy a C-7699 instead? Or do something else?

Those filters use a cartridge adapter. The cartridge itself would be very loose around the center pipe and they adapter would center and seal it after the nut on the top was tightened.
If you have a 100sq. ft. cartridge there will be one at the top and bottom of the cartridge. If a 150, one at each end of each cartridge (though later a single 150 sq. ft. cartridge became available). They are removable, but needed to allow the filter to actually work properly. Newer ones are clear, like the picture. Some older are opaque. Correct cartridge for the 100 sq. ft. is the Unicel C-7699, Pleatco PFAB100, Filbur FC1950.
