Repair of sinking pergola post

Hi everybody,

I found a sinking pergola post in my backyard recently. I searched the web and found very useful conversations in this forum so I decided to join and learn from you guys of how to repair it.

The post has a concrete footing, and I plan to jack it up with adjustable lally column to replace the sinking post. Would love to learn any good suggestions of where to get the proper equipment and how to do it. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Eric Hwang

Hey Eric and Welcome !!!

Lally columns are $100 most places and you'll never need one again. I'd use a car jack and a vertical 4x4 (and possibly some pieces of scrap) to raise the frame.

Is the post rotted away and causing the sinking?

The pergola roof is too high, way beyond a car jack could do.
I think you're missing the theory.

Jack an 8ft long 4X4 like it's a new leg with your existing car jack or the bottle jack linked above. If you get beyond the jacks reach, build a temporary leg and add scraps to the top of the 4x4 and jack it again.

Remove the bricks around the base and dig around the post a bit to get an idea about how deep the post goes.

You might be able to secure a different piece of wood to the post and then jack up the post from there.

Maybe pour some concrete around the post once it is jacked up if the post is deep enough.
