I wanted to verify what I’ve been finding online. There are two types of iron found in water with one fairly easily removed. Is there an affordable method for removing the other?
Iron has two oxidation states that are most common - Fe2+ (Ferrous iron) and Fe3+ (Ferric iron). Ferrous compounds are typically very soluble in water and can not be mechanically filtered out. Ferric compounds are not soluble and are often in the form of iron oxide or hydroxide particulates (red rust stains). Ferrous iron can be converted into ferric iron by oxidation (typically chlorine oxidation in pools). So, if you add chlorine to water with iron in it, you will typically see it turn a brown-green color and that is suspended iron particulates. One method of removal is by filtration. Other than that method (oxidation & filtration) there is no other cost effective way to remove iron.
