Ready to give up...6 days pool WONT clear! Help plz

Sorry for all the questions but when should I do the OCLT? When pool is completely clear? Should I do that now even though deep end is still cloudy? I don’t want to do anything wrong and have it interrupt my progress. -Julie

Keep at the SLaM level until the water is completely clear. All the way down to the MD. What duraleigh was talking about is once you get into maintenance mode.

OCLT is for once you are completely clear. Not sure if you've heard this one but I like to use a quarter. If you can tell heads or tails on the bottom in the deep end, you are clear.

Great thanks!! I haven’t read that far yet but figured it wasn’t until I was clear. Getting a little impatient...want to be finished and on to maintenance!! Although I don’t know what I will do with myself when the work is done!! Oh wait....I will be able to enjoy my pool!

Thanks! It’s not really consuming that much FC. At most 3ppm a day and maybe 1-2 overnight so hopefully I’m down the homestretch. I’ve been thru some bleach as well. But I can’t imagine the money I could’ve spent of dealing with the pool store! I hope it’s not 6 more days. Ugh.....I’m hoping 2–3 more!

I too couldn't imagine what someone would pay at a pool store just to clear a 22k g swamp n how much water changing would take place just to keep the chlorine CYA ratio in check.

You are almost done. Just keep at it and know that you have been through the worst of it and now know how a proper SLAM is completed. Your next feat will be how to properly close your beautiful oasis.

Thank you Casey!! I can proudly say I did it ALL BY MYSELF!!!! No help whatsoever....oh wait....I did have a friend come and replace my backwash hoses as they kept exploding!!!!!!! Water too cold I guess. So I got some heavy duty ones and haven’t had a problem since!!!

I’m out today but if the deep end looks good tomorrow I will start OCLT (OLCT?) then maintenance!! Whoo Hoo!!!!!

Main drain crystal clear today as is the rest of the pool!!!! I’m so happy. For some reason Tapatalk won’t let me attach any pics. I will keep trying but wanna say thanks for the help and most of all support!! I almost lost it in day 6/7 but your encouragement helped me stick with it!!!

Here’s my day 14 pics. Excuse the dirt. I was away for two days and we had some drenching rain. I Had my son adding bleach. I am thrilled with how it looks. FC Dropped to 3 while I was away so I plan on bringing it back to shock level and OLTC tomorrow morning to see how that goes.

I plan on raising my CYA to 50 as suggested after passing OLTC.

Thanks so much for all your help and support especially on day 6/7 when I was ready to give up!!

As you can see, the SLAM takes some time. Here are some thoughts. You can close your pool late September if you wish, although you must open your pool up no later than last week in April or first week in May. What you can do it after you close the pool, go out and purchase inexpensive solid tarps at Wal Mart and cover 80% of the pool for at least one month, or through October and possibly November. You also want water to be able to run off the mesh cover as well. Secure the cover with whatever you are comfortable with. Then come December you can remove the solid tarps. In the spring, you can place back on for the first week weeks only as weather becomes warmer. This will help tremendously.

It also could be due to the mesh cover quality and the amount of sunlight that is allowed in. We closed a pool with CYA and high chlorine only to open to a green pool (friend of mine and not mine). We also closed a pool (liner replacement real late) with no chlorine, no algaecide, no CYA only to open to a clear pool 2 weeks later (another friend). There is a difference in the mesh quality.

The only other option is to close the pool real late and open up early. By the pictures, your back yard looks like the amount of leaves that will fall will be a lot of work, so closing may be in your best interest, but consider some tarps. Good luck and keep us posted!

Really good idea!! I will definitely try the tarps. I’m going to try to close later this year. In my area the pollen is horrendous and clogs skimmers etc so we have always waited until after Mother’s Day to open as most of the pollen is gone. I did price a solid cover but it’s really pricey so tarps sound like a great idea! I appreciate the info!! Thank you.

Do what I do. Go out and purchase 2 extra sets (total 4 skimmer baskets), that is assuming you have 2 skimmers. This will give you a total of 6 skimmer baskets. Then go out and purchase the skimmer socks (check Amazon) as you find good deals or even on line at swimming supply stores. Put the socks around the skimmer baskets and then swap them out daily or however often is necessary. They clean up real easy and make sure that most of the pollen will be caught in the sock. Then when all 6 baskets are full of pollen, clean them out all at once on the grass with a strong stream of water (works like a charm). Reinstall the socks and keep going. You will find that the $5 or $10 spent during the season on socks will help out a lot with the clogs, etc.

First let me say my pool looks fantastic this morning!

OLTC....last evening (7:30pm) TC was 12.5 CC .5. This morning rechecked and TC is 11 and CC .5. On the one hand, im second guessing my counting and on the other hand seeing it as a fail. Should I keep SLAM levels and try the test again tomorrow since there was a 1.5 ppm loss?

When I get a pass, should I increase PH?

Today’s numbers
FC 11.0
CC .5
PH >7.2
TA 50
CH 100
CYA 30 ( socks in skimmer now to bring that number up to 50)

Allow your levels to drop down to around 7 ppm before performing another overnight. There is testing error and even the most skilled individual could be off by 25%, and the higher the level the greater the loss (by %, not flat amount). If you are at 7 ppm at 10 p.m. and then at 6 a.m. you test 5.5 (take your time, then you are not done). Do not add any more chlorine and allow your levels to drop. Without activity today, your TC should drop by this evening or at least 2 days. If you find that tonight you are at 7 ppm and you dropped 4 ppm in one day, then you are not finished. I would say no more than 3 ppm because of the higher levels.
