My Raypak pool heater is under a year old and twice I have gotten a scensor failure on it, both times it was snowing. When I power it off and back on it goes away and works fine. I recently installed a variable speed pump, could this cause this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you provide us which Raypak heater you have?
Most Raypak heaters are natural draft heaters. Could it be the design of the exhaust such that you are not getting acceptable draft when initially started?

Thanks for your reply. It's a Raypak 266, and the equipment is all outdoor exposed. It only seems to do it when it's snowing or super cold outside.

Is the heater running when it’s cold outside? What @mknauss is getting at is that you can not run a gas pool heater when it’s cold. The flue gas condensation can be incredibly corrosive and will destroy internal components.

Raypak claims their patented Unitherm Governor will reduce the amount of condensation:

CAUTION: The patented Unitherm Governor is a thermostatic mixing valve specifically designed to maintain constant heater internal temperature between 120°F (49°C) and 135°F (57°C) despite continually changing flow rates from the filter and changing pool temperatures. This range is needed to reduce the amount of condensation from the fin tubes which will occur if the heater runs for any length of time below 100°F (38°C) water from the pool. It is also needed to inhibit scale formation in the tubes by maintaining temperatures well below accelerated scaling temperatures.
Yes it is 17 below here and I was trying to make sure the water temp stayed plenty warm to avoid any freezing. We keep our hot tub open in the winter and the heater is a pool spa combo. The spa is covered so I guess just let the current water temp be what it is.
Sensor failure is the temperature sensor. The cold may cause it to give a reading outside what the board considers normal and displays an error code.
