I just bought a Raypak 138k heat pump. The manual (see picture) says I need a 60-amp breaker and can run #8 THHN if I am within 110 feet of the pool. I'm only 25-30 feet away. Does that wire size sound right or should I increase it to #6 THHN?
#8 AWG THHN is ok for this installation as specified by the manufacturer.
Ampacity and rating.
The manufacturers of hermetic systems supply the correct protection, conductor sizing, and other information on the equipment nameplate.
Use this information when wiring an air conditioner or other hermetic motor equipment.
NOTE: Refer to the National Electrical Code, Article 680, for general requirements for swimming pools and equipment, and to Article 440 for special considerations necessary for circuits supplying hermetic refrigeration motor/compressors.
Over and over again, I have heard HVACR technicians and electricians quote rules of thumb regarding wiring sizing, and I have witnessed and participated in many heated debates on the topic.
That's a great link, I think, provided by @JamesW - What Most Techs Get Wrong About Wire Sizing, explaining how and why the NEC/NFPA allows manufacturers to set the smaller #8 as acceptable in this case. I still might consider upsizing to #6 to allow for a future equipment change - perhaps for a bigger heater or one with different specs.
