I have a 16x30 inground pool, 20k gallons that I inherited when I moved into the house. There are two skimmers, no bottom drain.

My 80gal sand filter sprung a leak and had to be replaced. Instead of replacing it with another sand filter I went with a Pentair Clean and Clear 320 Cartridge Filter. The install went smoothly. I power and prime the 1.5HP pump, bleed the air valve until water squirts out, and water flows through normally. There are no leaks or dripping water.

There is a rattling noise in both skimmers that are now present that weren't there before. Water level as at the water mark though I am trying now to overfill it a little to see if that makes a difference. There is no vortex in the skimmers nor are there any air bubbles at all anywhere.

EDIT: Ok, I just took a closer look and I do in fact see microscopic air bubbles where the water comes out of the skimmer (the water comes out of a small slit beneath where the water comes in - I don't know what that type of skimmer is called but that's what it is).

With this discovery, and the fact that the air bubbles are at BOTH skimmers I don't think the problem is at the skimmers but rather further upstream somewhere. I did have to mildly wrestle the main flexible hose coming from the pool that is buried underground a little bit to attach it to the pump that had to be moved move slightly. Perhaps I am drawing in air there. Any troubleshooting techniques I can use to narrow down where the air intake is?

Thank you for your time, this is my first post.

D,

I can't think of anything in a skimmer that could "rattle".

I do agree that your system probable has more flow than it did before you replaced the filter.

Can you eliminate, or change, the noise by removing the skimmer basket or sticking your hand in the skimmer or holding the weir doors down or ???

Odd indeed.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi, thanks for the response!

I edited the post since I do now see microscopic air bubbles coming out of the jets.

D,

Sounds like you have those "magic" skimmers that use return water and the venturi principle to create more suction at the skimmers. Not sure if that means more suction or more marketing...

The pools that I have seen here all seem to have an adjustment at the pad for the return flow to the skimmers.

Do your skimmers look like this.

Do you have other pools returns, or just the two in the skimmers?

Thanks,

Jim R.

I have "Aqua Genie" pool skimmers that look mostly like this:

They may use the venturi principal to suck down, I am not sure. There is no adjustment anywhere for the skimmer intake levels or anything. There are no other pool returns.

Any leak with any of the connections at the filter or heater would result in water dripping, which there is none. I am thinking that I introduced a leak in the part of the flexible hose that goes into the ground since I did have to move that around. I should dig that up and inspect.
