When energized, the igniter on my heater glows from the tip to about halfway down the shaft. Is this normal, or would I expect it to glow down closer to the base?

If the heater lights, I wouldn't worry about it. You can call Hayward with the question. They are (or were before going public) very good with answering these types of questions.
I'm having intermittent problems with the heater igniting, which is the reason for my question. I've not had great luck with Hayward support, maybe it just depends on who answers the phone.
