Questions about levels, why I am getting skewed results, and quick thoughts, advice while I wait to receive one of your test kits

If your SWCG is happy and creating chlorine, the salinity is fine. If the SWCG starts to report low (or high) salinity, then you use the test kit to verify the salinity.

I guess that's something I need to learn about. Like I said I've just started doing this but I'll check it out. I guess I need to take a good look at the whole set up out there.

Sorry to bother you again, but at the meaning to ask you about the tile line for the scum line around the pool. Ours looks really really dry and there is a waterline. I've tried scrubbing it more than once and it doesn't really do a lot.
What advice do you have about that?

If it is calcium, only real way to get rid of it is with kieserite or soda blasting.
If it is just dirt/scum, then try using a magic eraser. Or some other scrub brush with a benign cleaner. I use simple green.

I've used the magic eraser. I'm not sure what to call it or if it's the same thing as what we're talking about, but the space between the water line and the top of the pool just looks really dry I don't know if I would call it scaly I don't know what to call it it just looks like really dry, is that the same thing?

Fiberglass pools with out a waterline tile will show fading or sun damage. Some use car wax in that area.

I'm not really sure if I described it right but what you're saying makes sense because I actually thought about something like that. I'm anyway I'm going to send you a picture to show you what it looks like hopefully you can see it okay and then you can tell me if what you told me is still applicable

I didn't get a chance to fully test yesterday I was in the middle of it and my husband grabbed me and said we had to go and look at a refrigerator and it was getting into the evening so anyway I'm testing it now

You can see if acid will do anything. Otherwise looks like normal gelcoat degradation at the waterline.

What kind of acid?
As far as the normal gel coat degradation is there anything at all to do with that? It just looks so icky not very attractive

Also I did get a chance to do a couple tests yesterday before I got interrupted the total chlorine was six alkalinity was actually didn't get that far sorry the pH was still 8.2 so that's still high

I really hope you don't get irritated with all my questions, I'm just trying to learn how to do it right

Same acid you use to lower the pH, muriatic acid. Dilute it 4 or 5 parts water to 1 part acid.
Not much to do about the gel coat. Waterline tile helps hide that area.

I have today's readings in about 5 minutes
Okay I thought that is what you meant by acid it wasn't sure, I have logged the new readings and in my opinion they are still totally screwed up. What do we do from here? I know you said shock is not the answer for most things but I'm doing everything exactly as you say and I'm having no trouble with the test kids I understand everything but the numbers are just bad
