Question on pump.

Recently moved into a new home with 3315g (18x40) pool with auto cover. Signature has been updated.

Pool in previous home was single speed and had Hayward vs Intellichor.

Pool just opened today. What a difference that autocover makes (previous pool had mesh cover so was solid green and took weeks). Some debri in pool but water is clear. Will still follow slam guidelines.

A few questions:

1. Need to get into the manual to understand timer settings for different speeds. I’ve received guidance that normal operating rpm should be 3000-3200 and if reducing, shouldn’t be any lower than 2300 for salt cell to work. Are these guidelines accurate?

2. Salt reading immediately at opening (electronic and drop testing) indicating 600 ppm. Very odd salt is that low with autocvoer. Perhaps due to stratification and need to allow pump to go for run for hours before measuring?

3. What are recommended the rpm settings for pool of my size using the JVS165S 1.65? I’m the kind of person that likes the pump to run 24/7 but I’m very open to lowering the rpm’s at night etc.

Thanks.

Nope.

My pump and SWG run fine at 1400 RPM.

Every pool is different. You need to experiment start low and raise the speed until your SWG shows FLOW . Then add 200 rpms and that is your minimum pump speed.

Let the pump run for 24-48 hours before acting on salt readings. Salt water is heavier and will have settled to the bottom.

You should run the pump for a reason. Consider both speed and duration if you have a VS pump and automation. Reasons for running the pump can be:
  • Mix chemicals: Low speed for 1/2 hour is fine for chlorine and acid additions. Salt, calcium, and stabilizer can require more circulation at higher speeds.
  • SWG: Clean filter flow off speed + 200RPM, for whatever duration you need for the % output of the SWG.
  • Filter: Low speed is better for filtering. Filter long enough so you are happy with the water.
  • Skim: Run the lowest speed that get you sufficient skimming. Run for long enough to get the results you want.
  • Heater: Run at the speed that gives you enough flow for the heater and run for the duration you need to heat.
  • Vacuum: sufficient RPM to operate the vacuum for as long as necessary to clean satisfactorily.
Some of us with VS pumps and a SWG like to run our pump 24/7 at low speed and always add some chlorine to the water.

If you have an In Floor Cleaning Systems, your pump must run much longer at higher speeds.

That is not right.
What are the depths (shallow and deep).
You are closer to 25,000 gallons...

You need to focus on chlorine first. Can you post a full set of water test results?

Pool looks green. Do an overnight chlorine loss test. Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test
If you fail, you SLAM. Link-->SLAM Process

@ajw22 thank you m, will review.

@PoolStored. Shallow end is 4 ft. Deep end is 8ft. I’ve run multiple calculators, getting 3315 gallons. Let me know if I’m doing something wrong.

Sure doesn’t look green to me. Fully realize I need to slam and ensure oclt; however - this picture was taken right at opening. There are debris and it definitely needs a slam - which I will begin tomorrow.

Your first post said 18x30.
I have a 20x40 with same dimensions. Took me a year to figure out it was actually 29,000.

Go measure the actual depth of the water in the shallow end. The volume of water across the entire top of the pool at that depth has the biggest influence on the volume. If it is 4 feet you are correct. If it is 3 feet, then you are closer to 27,000.
Report shallow depth from tape measure.
