Question about how my Intellicenter is wired to my pumps.

I am going through the pool equipment preparing for startup. I noticed something I cannot find an answer for. My Filter pump is wired to a relay with SWG and heater. My SPA pump is wired straight to the breaker, not through a relay. Is this correctly wired? Is it controlled through the RS232 cable?

What model pumps are we discussing?

VS pumps controlled by RS-485 cable get continuous power.

SS pumps are wired to load side of relay.

I looked at it with fresh eyes this morning. I found the answer vs pumps are directly connected to power. What was confusing me was the filter pump was connected to relay. But I see now that is to make sure the pump is running when the intellichlor and heater are running. I found the spa blower and lights on relays but not connected to the controller. Aux 1 and Aux 2 were connected to unused relays so I unplugged them. I see aux 1 thru 8. One is labeled SPA is that locked to a specific function?

VS filter pump should be connected to LINE side of filter pump relay, not the LOAD side.

Looked again the pump and heater are on the line side and the SWG is on load side. So the pump and heater always have power like the Spa pump and are controlled by the RS485? Then the only function of the FLTR relay is to turn on and off SWG?

Correct

Connecting the relays to the controller board. Does it matter which one I use Aux1 etc.. I would just need change name from Aux1 to Lights or Spa blower?

Ok That makes sense. One last question about Mastertemp heater. The RS485 cable is connected to the J2 block Gas Heater. Is this correct?

No.

You have two choices in how you control a MasterTemp.

From the 2 wire firemans switch in the heater to the J2 gas heater relay and define it as a Gas Heater.

Or, from RS-485 block in the heater to one of the RS-485 connector in the IntelliCnert and define it as MasterTemp.

The way I understand things work:
  • Using the Firemans switch on the heater connected to the gas heater on the IntelliCenter:
    • The heater is powered off when no heat and the heater controls are not accessible
    • The IntelliCenter acts as the heater thermostat using its water temperature sensor
    • The MasterTemp temperature sensor is only used during heating as a safety device for maximum temperature shutoff
    • Heater status and error messages are displayed on the heater panel and not on the IntelliCenter
  • Using RS-486 temperature control between the heater and IntelliCenter
    • The heater is always powered on and the heater controls are accessible even when the heater is idle
    • The IntelliCenter tells the heater the desired setpoint
    • The IntelliCenter water temperature sensor is not used during heating
    • The heater operates independently of the IntelliCenter to run when it's temperature sensor says the water temperature is below the setpoint
    • Heater status and error messages are sent to the IntelliCenter for display on the control panel and app
We have had a discussion about the IntelliCenter and MasterTemp interactions in...

Thanks I saw that thread earlier I will bookmark it, I also have an Intellivalve bypass for heater. Another question about com ports. Mastertemp says to connect to J4/J5 com port. J4 already has my 2 pumps and J5 is connected to Intellichlor add-on board. Can you add multiple devices to a com port?

Your IntelliChlor surge board has three RS-485 connectors you can use. They are all daisy chained together.

Thanks, I was just searching to confirm I could use the surge board connections. I now need to see if there is an advantage to using RS485 over the old fireman switch method.

Let me know which way you decide to connect it. I'm sure you've seen the challenges I've been facing in that other thread. My plan is to change mine back to the fireman's switch and see if I can get the bypass to work correctly by having the IntelliValve connected directly to the IntelliCenter so that it has continuous power.

I was really hoping the RS-485 connection would make everything 'just work' but that isn't the case for me. I also want to have access to the heater settings directly from the heater panel (so I can do things like enable the bypass on the heater) and I can't do that with the RS-485 connection. It seems backwards to me but at this point I just want a configuration that I can trust will work with the bypass.

I decided to leave it connected to fireman’s switch. For 2 reasons, I do not see enough advantage to using RS-485 and second my electricians connected my Intellivalve to Intellicenter through a conduit with the other valve and pump control cables requiring removing all of them just to get the one cable out.
