My former single-speed Hayward pump (PowerFlo LX, SP1580X15HFP) suddenly stepped down to an obviously lower RPM, which ended up tripping the breaker, apparently drawing far more amps than it should. The impeller still spins. The odd thing is for a couple of restarts, it kicked into its old self, humming along nicely, before disengaging back to its Jekyll persona. When this occurred at night, we noticed the shifts from and to normal were accompanied by flashes of light (sparks) from the motor, like there were a short circuit. Inspecting the wires showed no obvious short. Eventually the fits back to normal operation vanished, and we used this as a good excuse to get a variable-speed motor. Still, any idea what this was? The filter is about three years old, but it did go through some abuse: Pump Question
