Pump sometimes surges

This has been ongoing since I opened the pool in April. It’s not every day, it can be weeks between episodes. I’ve backwashed the filter, kept the skimmers clean, changed the o ring in the pump basket, blown out the skimmer lines, checked for air leaks, and made sure the water level has been maintained. It had been running well for the past 2 weeks and running well all day yesterday, then out of the blue, it started surging. I had not done anything to the pump. This morning, it’s running normally again. I’m at a loss as to what the problem is.

You might have a intermittent stuck weir door.

My pump was not fully priming yesterday after I backwashed, I was so confused. Checked the skimmer while it was running & still not priming and the water level just wasn't high enough, weir door was allowing air into the skimmer line. Let it fill back up to 1/2 up the skimmer and it stopped. I hope your solution is as simple!

Thanks for your reply. I’ll check those. It’s just really strange. It starts out fine in the morning. It runs a few hours, now, 4 1/2 hrs later, I hear is surging again.

The water level is 1/2 way up the skimmer, where I’ve always tried to keep it. I’ll add add more while the pump is running to see if it makes a difference. I checked the skimmer weirs, and they are freely moving. I appreciate all the suggestions.

I’ve added water to a point higher than I usually keep it. It’s still surging.

2007 Hot Spring Prodigy, 325 gal. Just changed the water Nov 23, 2019, using the Frog sanitizing system, lines purged last spring. I test the water with Taylor's.
