Pump question

This is our 3rd year opening the pool and we can’t remember if we are missing a step, but water will start to flow into the pump and then just stop. Can anyone tell me what we are doing wrong?

My husband reconnected the pump to the filter and the return hoses. We can’t remember if we’re supposed to do anything to prime the filter or anything

Let's see a better picture of the suction side where is the hose going/coming.

Water will flow in for about 3 seconds, then stop.

Make sure the mpv is set to something other then winter. Lube the lid gasket of the pump so there's no air leak. Also make sure the union on the front is closed snug and perhaps can also be a source for air....
