Pump motor replacement

I have a Sta-Rite P6EA6G207L 2hp pump. Not sure how old. The motor has been making some noises that sound like bearing or something internally is going out. I would like to upgrade to a 2 speed to save energy. Should I just replace the motor or the entire unit? I want to get something good but don't want the best. Would like to stay under $500 if that is possible.

Also want to add that pressure is 17 psi when the filter is cleaned out and all diverters are open. I have read that is high...

If the wet end is in good shape and it's not leaking around the casing, I'd consider replacing the motor and seal.

It'll pay you to shop around though, because you may find a new pump for what a motor will cost. Especially if you would benefit from a smaller pump.
 
That's one big honking pump you have. I think if it were me, I'd look for something smaller unless you have some water feature that requires that large a pump?

As for replacing the motor with a 2-speed a B2983 will work. It says that it's a 1½ hp but it has a 1.47 service factor so the total hp is the same as the B855 you have now.
