BTW my 1st pool was approx 40,000 gals rectangular with a 9 foot deep end and diving board. My current pool is 30,000 gals. kidney shaped with a 9 ft deep end and 3 long steps at the shallow end. If it matters to anyone. I have always vacuumed to waste, when cleaning. The other day I vacuumed to filter thinking it wouldnt matter too much, as I was in a rush to get the pool ready for some guests. Thats when the trouble started. My seal plate started spraying out the side. I took it off and inspected, and put it back together and tride again. It got worse. I assumed that I had not clamped it down properly. So I replaced the o ring with a new one, and lubed it up well. Then restarted the pump, after clamping it properly and checking for any cracks in the seal plate, or debris in the tight fitting grooves of the o ring. Still a massive water spray. So I took it all apart again and checked for obstructions in th empeller and out the top (exit) line that goes to the diverter valve on top of the filter. Restarted the pump again.... same issue. Now I tried to back wash. I got the pump primed and pressure built back up, turned the handle to backwash. It was backwashing fine, but spraying out the side still. I have not emptied the sand filter yet to see what is going on there. Before I did that I wanted to see if there was something I'm missing? Any help from the board is greatly appreciated.

Which pump are you talking about, brand and model? A picture of the pump and leaking area would help a lot. Sealplates DO crack at times.

Sta-Rite Pool Pump -- believe its called a Duraglass...3 photos last one showing the diffuser with 5 screws. No cracks that I have found.
