Brand new Hayward SP1593 pump worked for about 40 days. When i switch it on it just hums. Empeller spins freely. Any idea what caused this? Covered under warranty but i want to prevent this from happening again if i did something wrong.

Most likely a capacitor. They are typically an easy DIY thing, but that new I'd take advantage of the warranty visit if you can.

With no way to move water, you might consider slowly adding some liquid chlorine to the water and brushing it around really good to help prevent algae from setting-in. In this summer heat it won't take long.

Not common, but with electronics odd things can happen. Better the cap than the entire motor I suppose.
