Pump / Heater Intermatic timer

I bought a house with a pool and the previous owners/installer setup the timer circuit to turn the heatpump on/off and not the pool pump.

My understanding is it should control the pump, as the heater will shutdown when it reaches temperature or there is no flow (pump shut off).

Am I wrong Do other people control their heatpumps with a timer?

The best way to control the heater is through a timer, whether along with the pool pump or as a standalone unit. The flow switch should be the backup, not the primary means of shutting down the heater.
