Been changing out pump basket weekly or so for 17 yrs. It is so stuck that I'm afraid the handle will break if I keep pulling. It looks like the notches are lined up properly but it will not budge. I've scraped out most of the debris by hand and tried using a flat screwdriver to pry around edge but can't make any entry around the rim of the basket. Please help!

Could you use a paint can opener to go through the "mesh" on the inside of the basket and then be able to pull up on the opener?

Hi, welcome to TFP! What brand and model of pump is it? Could you post a picture of the problem?
the mesh holes seem too small to fit the opener end. I tried fashioning a hanger but it just bent when I pulled. It is really stuck. This has never happened beforeWelcome to the forum

Century made the motor, but there should be another brand name like Pentair, Hayward, Waterway, ect...

I ended up just busting it up and I'll get a new one. Any idea why this happened after 17 yrs of not having this problem?
Did the pump overheat at anytime? Have you ever used any kind of lube on the lip of the basket?
^^^ This.... If the pump has ever run dry or lost prime for an extended timeframe it can get hot enough to possibly distort the plastic basket.
