Pump and filter shopping!! Need some recommendations PLEASE!!

James is correct, that one does not have a cord with it, it will need the correct size power wire and 120v plug installed on site and plugged into a GFCI plug :)

Which leads me to my next question — filter size!!! I don’t know what is considered big and what isn’t for a cartridge filter. My current sand filter is 16” and does a great job but cartridge just seems easier. I hate backwashing lol

How often are you backwashing? Between skimmer hairnet and pool cleaner that doesn’t go through filter, I hardly ever needed to backwash. Maybe once a year

Also, during rainy season when I needed to drain so I wouldn’t overflow, I’d just open up backwash without turning on pump. (yes, I would rinse after of course).

I hated cartridges. LOL

Living somewhere with harsh winters, I appreciate the ability of being able to take my cartridge filter apart and easily bring it all inside for the winter. The added weight of the sand would make a sand filter more difficult. Cleaning the cartridge isn't fun, but my 150sq ft. filter only needs cleaning once at the end of the season.

I think that the above pump would be exempt from the new regulations due to the total hp.

I think that above ground pumps are also exempt from the regulations.
I think u are correct as i just got a new 1.5 hp as a warranty replacement (new design) & asked before pickup if it would be 2 speed because of the new regulations & was told no - also they seemed unaware of the regulation. This was at an above ground pool dealer.

That makes sense! No winter here. 😉

I would only backwash maybe 4 times a season. I like that cartridge filters you just clean with the hose a couple times a season and can bring it inside during the winter along with the pump. We have cold winters here and I feel more comfortable bringing my equipment inside and storing in my warm basement until spring time. Winterizing a sand filter is just an extra chore. The Intex cartridge filters were terrible, I agree. But their pumps that use cartridges are wayyyy undersized for anything other than a kiddie pool, IMO.

Time and time again the cartridges get a bad shake. And the person goes with a much bigger sand filter which gets all the glory. A much larger anything filter would have done the same thing. Cartridges too.

I have a 1.5hp 2 speed hayward matrix with a 250lb sand filter on a 15x24x54" pool and I run it on low speed 24/7 and it's fantastic. The only reason I have a 1.5 and not a 1hp 2 speed is because the place I bought from didn't have one. I only run high speed for vacuuming.

I'm betting a 1hp 2 speed would be perfect on a 7500 gallon pool. I'd go with that and a 250-300lb sand filter though options on filters is dangerous territory.

Why is it “dangerous territory”? My current pump and salt filter came together as a set so I’m new to this whole “buy the biggest filter I can” thing lol

My sand filter has kept my water crystal clear and beautiful but it will occasionally get a little bit of sand in the pool (easy fix with Miss Queeny the robot, but still annoying) and I DESPISE hooking up the backwash hose lol. Basically, I’M LAZY when it comes to filters!!!!! Winterizing it is kind of a PITA too. I hear DE filters are even more work lol so I’m going with the most simple option.

Since my new pool is the exact same dimensions as my Intex, I suppose I could use my old equipment if I still don’t have my mind made up by the time my pool is installed, right? I’m sure that won’t be the case since I like to have everything ready to go for opening but I mean worst case scenario lol

Lol. Then yeah. The cartridge pieces come apart and are light to move inside (although they *can* easily tolerate the weather, But we are all fanatics that bring our babies inside, right ? :ROFLMAO:

the cartridges themselves can air dry most of the way at the pad and then are light to carry into the garage to completely dry. It’s amazing how much water they hold just from the morning dampness when drying.

Oh yeah. It’ll work fine. You also may encounter shortages and/or jacked up pricing if you don’t act quick, and therefore decide to wait

That is my fear and why I am trying to act as quickly as possible. I’m noticing the only ridiculously priced pumps/filters at the moment are Intex ones, LOL. Go figure!

You can buy them separately, often sets have the filter on the smaller side so it doesn't flow as easily and needs to be backwashed more often.

It's dangerous territory because some people swear by DE, others by cartridge etc. Those who invested in DE will never admit a good sand filter can do as good when it comes to what matters etc.

It’ll be easy to cobble together some short term adapters to make the old system work for a season or two if you decide, or if it’s decided for you. But keep in mind you’ll also just drive yourself nuts with all that extra time to think about it. Think of your poor poor husband. Is his sanity worth a couple extra hundred dollars? :laughblue::laughblue:
