Pool stains look like rust

Ok I’ve been adding chlorine this morning, I will add more now to bring up the chlorine level as per the slam. Procedure
I would not do that. Without the FAS-DPD test, you cannot reliably test FC. You have no way to test CYA to know what your SLAM level FC should be. If you raise FC above SLAM level, because you can't test properly you can damage pool and equipment. It would also not be safe to swim.

Add no more chlorine today. Add 24 ounces of liquid chlorine per day until the test kit arrives.

The kit you have is really only good for pH and alkalinity.

You need a FAS-DPD FC test. Link-->FAS/DPD Chlorine Test Kit
You need a CYA test. Link-->Cyanuric Acid (CYA)
You need CH reagents.

By the time you cobble it together it will be more $$ than just getting a proper kit. Get
This -->TF-100 Test Kit
or This-->TF-Pro

The TF-Pro is the best deal for reagents and includes a speed stir.

Getting the proper kit will save you $$ in chemicals and messing around. It is a no brainer investment.

GM adding latest results finally got my complete test kit please let me know any suggestions thanks

Your CYA is 60. Always round up to the next 10. Keep your FC for your CYA level. Link-->FC/CYA Levels

Lower your pH with muriatic acid. Use Pool Math for the amount of acid. Link-->PoolMath

For Clarity, you tested FC with 0870/0871 powder/reagent, then added R-0003 and your CC was then 5? See instructions here:

If your CC is 5, then you need to SLAM. Link-->SLAM Process

Ignore the FC/BR test with the color comparitor...just report the FC from the 0870/0871 powder/reagent and CC with the R-0003

Hi thanks for the quick response

I retook the combined and total chlorine test and it came back as 5 again see below.

A I will get some Muraic acid to lower the PH

Q with the calcium do I need to raise it a little with it being 170ppm

You followed these instructions?

What was your FC and CC using these ^^^ instructions?

Yes, I would raise your CH to 250. Did you do the test and added drops until the color did not change again, then subtracted the last drop?

I would not add calcium on the same day that you use a product that changes pH (like muriatic acid or CYA). Do it on a day you don't add anything else.

Just doing one at a time
My calcium after testing took 16 drops to go back to blue with r-0012 equals 160ppm does it need raising to 250 as my wife says the water feels slimy

Read the calcium test I linked. You add drops until the color does not change, then subtract the last drop. If you are stopping when it changes to blue, you are stopping too early. Continue to add drops until the color does not change...subtract the last drop.

What sample size are you using for CH? 10mL or 25mL?

Hi 25ml and then add drops until goes from red to blue. I’m adding the instructions which they gave me

  • Continue adding drops as long as the color continues changing. The final drop, that does not change the color any further, does not count.
