Pool newbie. A little help please.

Just ordered the TF100 test kit. So by next week should be able to test with the best! Cant wait. On a side note been keeping the FC about 10 (highest strips will read) Water is mostly clear but still getting a lot of white/gray powder at the bottom every day. Once the kit arrives the SLAMming shall begin

Great news. I think you made a wise choice and the kit will repay itself in short order. Until then if you have any questions just ask.

As for the white/gray powder - hard to tell, could be dead algae (probably) or it could be some calcium precipitating out due to the high chlorine or something else. The calcium happens some time under unusual conditions and generally doesn't present a long term issue. Good job with the pool.

Ok. So did the tests and things look pretty good

FC 9
CC.5 it was just the slightest tint of pink. I bet half a drop would have worked
CH 475 vinyl pool but we have very hard water to start with
TA 260
pH 7.8. Poolmath says to add 9.3 ounces of muriatic acid
CYA 41

Anything im missing besides letting the FC drift down? The water is just a bit cloudy and was going to SLAM this weekend but with temps near 90 the kids are going to want to swim

Congrats on the new kit!

Adjust your ph down to 7.2 with muriatic acid.
Raise your chlorine up to 13 or 14 to get your SLAM started. Swim this weekend and then raise it up to 16 next week.
If is safe to swim with chlorine up to shock level.
Your TA is high and will tend to make your PH rise. Keep an eye on it and when it gets to 7.8 lower it to 7.2 with muriatic acid. This will slowly lower your TA. If you want to lower TA faster follow this, Pool School - Lower Total Alkalinity
