Pool House Questions

Extra basement space is golden but a cheaper way may be do do slab style ;)

I don't know how old it is or what code was when they put in my "pole barn" pool house but its on a slab. I think you can do those chalet style cabin packages for a reasonable price that are designed for sleeping/common/leisure area on slab. Might suit a rustic setting too.

How many bedrooms did your septic system perc for and how many are already "used" by your main residence? That will determine if you can add any additional bedrooms. It's all bedroom based, not bathroom or kitchen based. I presume that applies to guest/pool houses just like it does for a main house. A call to the health dept. would answer all related questions if you aren't sure.

Very good point here. What if it is an office?

I’ve always heard that closets define bedrooms. But they will know. I guess only their definition is important.

Hi all,

Been on here for awhile. A few years ago we did a pretty elaborate owner build at our old house with a lot of help from here and have since moved. We have plans for a two tier infinity edge pool, but the piece we can't answer is whether a pool house makes sense.

We have a full walkout basement, and the pool will be on the edge of the yard, so getting upstairs to the kitchen isn't far, but not exactly convenient.

My initial thought was to do a pool house with living room, kitchen, guest room, spa bathroom, and a deck off the back with year round hot tub. Out front would have a covered area with outdoor kitchen and fireplace. This would be my dream setup, but the question is, how much use will it really get for the price?

We live in a frost climate so I assume it will need a full set of footers 5 plus feet down.

For those of you who have pool houses, do you use them? Were they worth it?

We also have three covered sections of the back deck so we have some shade areas.

Any thoughts are welcome!

regarding frost walls. wit the size it will prob be cause it sounds like a house pretty much i would be doing full frost walls. that would be one of the cheapest upgrades you will make in the overall scope of this project. my pool house is going to be 41x14 and i have full frost walls and brick ledges for all the brick. my buddy didn't want to frame on a slab even for mine.

if that slab moved the slightest it is going to jack ur roof all up. just saying.

i'm glad i did.

So by code for a slab here, I have to at least go 30" with footers. To me the question becomes whether I'd go further. Do you have a layout plan for your pool house? Would love to see it.

If you hit virgin soil, and I’m sure it’s kinda rocky, there wouldn’t be any need for deeper. It will never freeze 30” deep here so you are safe there.

We are in the middle of a pool build and have committed to either a detached pool house, no bathroom, basic kitchen, bar area etc. fireplace and TV. size roughly 16x20. It would 15 ft out the back of the house. 2nd option is to attach the back of the house roughly same dimensions. Basically extend the living room of the home. We are in So Cal. Nights are always cool and days are between 70 and 80 most of the year. We would be installing Electric Heaters in ceiling to take advantage of Solar PV. to allow us to enjoy during the evenings.

Originally we thought 15 ft walk was no big deal. Hearing from friends that if its attached we will use the area much more. Curious to hear any input on this.

So, our code for detached buildings here calls for: "Minimum depth finished grade to bottom of all footings – 30” or extended to solid bearing,
whichever is greater. "

I don't necessarily get the point if it's attached to the house. Isn't the point to have something out by the pool?

There are two kinds of people.............those who want their pool and outdoor area to be a part of the main house.....................those that want their pool and outdoor are to be a "destination spot"..........There is nothing wrong with either one......just something else to think about......how do you think you will use a pool and outdoor area? Quick jump in to cool off? Having big get togethers? Floating around with a cold drink in hand after a days work? Spending all weekend outside enjoying the area? No way is wrong and I use my pool for all of the above LOL No matter where you put your pool house you will find what works best for you and your family to use it.

Our pool is a destination pool. No pool house, just a pavilion and very small shed down there. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to stop by and see it for ideas on the logistics of the pool location. We too have a slope.
