Pool Heater

Ya after the membrane control pad stopped working on my very nice looking but 15 yr old laars lite2 ($ 300 for another) I just decided to keep using it til it broke. following winter we had a rare deep freeze. It busted the heat exchanger so I got a new Raypak that spring.

And I drain the equipment every year now during winter months

This is the problem with working on old heaters in bad condition; you begin throwing money at it in big chunks ($200 to $500 a pop) with no end in sight.

By time you realize that the heater is scrap metal, you have dropped $500.00 to $1,000.00 into it which could have been spent on a new heater.

In any case, it’s always a judgment call. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t.
Agreed. I told my wife. Let's just run the heater without the display and see what the default set temp is and play with the buttons (if it works) and adjust the temp. I'll decide next season if I want to spend around $250 on a new board.
Glad you got it running.

Welcome to the world of heater spare parts. Everything is $50 here, $200 there, etc, etc. You might look on Craig’s List to see if there are any similar heaters for sale at a cheap price and then scavenge one for parts. Otherwise, as @JamesW said, you could easily throw a lot of money down that rabbit hole ...
Thanks. I will look into Craigslist and FB Marketplace. I did look at Marketplace didn't see any pool heater in a 200-mile radius. I'll keep checking.

It's been my experience over the years that if one places scented dryer sheets (for cloths dryers) inside your heater it keeps critters out of your heater
over the time frame it's not being used. An old Hayward guy turned me on to this tidbit. (Stuff a handful here and there inside the heater) it works.

Be careful not to do anything that could end up interfering with the operation of the heater.

A loose dryer sheet might get sucked into the intake of the blower or block the intake.

Perhaps I was not clear .. those dryer sheets should be removed in the spring b4 starting the heater. This would be a winter time only preventive
treatment that works.
