Hi all- I’ve been doing the TFP guidelines for two seasons and it’s been amazing. I have had zero issues since following but something has creeped up on me and I want to verify a couple quick things.

I’ve been maintaining my salt water pool at 4-6 ppm FC, 0 CC, 45-50 cya, 250 calcium, 70 TA, 7.6-7.8 ph. I went away on vacation and my auto cover was on, water temp got to 100 degrees. Got home two days ago and tested the water and in about 10 days I lost all my chlorine, and now my Combined Chlorine is 4ppm. I added 150 oz of 12.5% chlorine and it didn’t bring the FC chlorine up at all. Was still reading less than 1. I just added 250oz more (it called for 220oz with the calculator) figured I’d slam it hard. But we keep the auto cover closed most of the time due to young children and I never lose my chemicals it seems doing that.

Is this the proper steps? I only ever did a slam one time when I started this and never have had to do much at all other than a once a week test with the Taylor 2006c kit. Water is crystal clear.

Does it add up that my pool being covered and getting that hot caused all this in a little over a week? Should I do anything else due to this? Or look for anything? If the cc drops to zero do I need to do an overnight chlorine test? Last question, my test kit is over a year old and sits outside in a cabinet, should I get all new chemicals? Im going to start storing in my house due to heat etc.

I ordered replacement chemicals that will be here Wednesday so I’ll do some tests with fresh stuff, but I definitely know the chlorine was low, I couldn’t smell any of it putting my nose in the tubes. Normally I can smell it when it’s that close.

So I ordered new chemicals and they will be here Wednesday. In the meantime my current chemicals are not expired so I did another test just now after adding a combined 3 gallons of bleach in a 14,000 gallon pool since Saturday, and my FC is still only .5ppm. I’ve been running my swg on boost/24 hrs a day as well. Does that seem right that I still am not getting chlorine levels up? I also did two tests on combined chlorine and both came back at 0 now and this morning they were 4ppm. What am I missing? 3 gallons of bleach, still almost zero FC but now my CC is zero as well. Should I add another 250oz of bleach based on the calculator?

FYI: Bleach/liquid chlorine looses it's kick quickly if stored in a hot environment. I added 2 gallons after a replaster/new fill. That stuff had been in the garage for a while (hot). Chlorine levels remained at zero. Got some new bleach and it's responding as expected now.

Interesting. This chlorine was about 2 months old but had been in my hot garage. I bought another 4 gallons yesterday and will store in my lower much cooler basement garage going forward.

Is there a way to check to my salt cell? It seems odd that on boost it’s not even adding any chlorine it seems.

Your CYA is 50. Always round up to the next 10.

Add the 5ppm of chlorine a day,

To test the cell, right before sunset, raise FC above 3. Run the pump for 30 minutes. Test FC after sunset. Turn the cell on 100%, run the pump and the cell. Test FC in the morning before sunrise and note the increase. If no increase, the cell is likely not working.

Thank you.

Got new chemicals today and fresh chlorine yesterday and all is well. I actually think it was the chlorine that was not good. I also think my salt cell is probably not doing its job. It’s 6 years old and I don’t know how long they last but I have a feeling it’s not adding enough chlorine at this point. I’ll do the sunset test but I’ve been running it on 100% 24/7 and it seems adding bleach is the only thing upping it.
