Pool filled Tuesday. No help from PB.

Hello all,
Plaster was sprayed on Tuesday and the pool was partially fired up on Wednesday. The service tech was unable to come out for fire up, so the project manager came out and just “winged it”. My pump schedule wasn’t even running properly and my skimmer is completely clogged with rocks. Now the PB isn’t answering my calls and they go on Christmas break next week. Our pool school is scheduled for December 30th, which I feel like is long time away with our equipment not even running properly. Also, he did a real crappy job of explaining what I need to be doing in the mean time. My PB has been terrible with scheduling and communication throughout our whole process. So frustrating!

Anyways.. I’ve read most of the beginner articles and just ordered the TF-100 kit earlier today. I plan taking a water sample to my local pool store tomorrow to at least get some kind of reading till I get my kit in the mail. I hoping to at least get a handle on the pH, CH and TA. I set my pump to run 24 hours a day and have been brushing twice a day. Not sure what I can do about the rocks in the skimmer pipe. Is there anything else I should be doing till my PB gets back to me?

If possible you should remove any rocks, or chunks of plaster, from inside the skimmer or in the skimmer pipes.. If the rocks are small enough to get into the pipes at the bottom of the skimmer, you need to get them out. You do not want them to start traveling down the pipes..

If the shop vac doesn't do the job, try a Drain King pushing the water from the pump end back out into the skimmer. Drain Kings come in a range of sizes, so you'll need to determine the right size to fit your plumbing. But get those rocks out ASAP before other stuff lodges behind them and completely clogs your pipes.

Re the plaster chemistry, your most important job is to keep the pH within range, i.e., below 8. It will climb constantly for months and you'll have to keep knocking it down with muriatic acid. This is normal and expected with new plaster.
 
Follow one of the startup guides. Download PoolMath and use it to log test results and calculate doses.

Add 1 qt of 10% liquid chlorine every other day until you get your test kit. That should keep your pool around 2-3 ppm of FC. Buy at least 2 lb of stabilizer that will raise your CYA to around 30.

Thank you everybody! PB came by and took care of the skimmer problem. They put some more chemicals in and also put chlorine tablets in the skimmer. Hopefully I’ll get my test kit soon so I can get a hold of the levels.

This just shows you what your pool builder knows... You should never put tablets in the skimmer baskets... It is not a big deal for a week or so, but over the long haul, it will cause your baskets to just fall apart.. Also if you turn your pump off, it will allow the suction pipe to fill with very acid water...

Sigh!!

I recommend you not allow them to add un-named chemicals. You should be aware of what's going in your water at all times. Unless you engage with the PB, they may dump in things you may not want. Read the startup guide as ajw22 recommended.
