Pool Depth Help! Tiny pool/spa

Hi Everyone!

We’re in the process of building a pool and it will be a TINY 8x12 pool/spa combo with wraparound benches.

My question is on pool depth. I am 5’4” and SO is 5’8”. He is heck bent on the “deep end” being 4.5’ deep. This would be a slope of 3.5’x4’x4.5’. For a 12 ft pool w wraparound bench, this seems too drastic and unnecessary, especially considering traditional spas are 3.5’ deep. Should I try to convince him to do a 3.5’x4’? Or would it be okay to maybe do 3.5x4.5 with a steep drop?

Our first pool and very confused. I’ve attached a photo for reference!

Do you have any local codes for maximum pool floor slope in a residential pool?

What does your builder say about what you can do?

Me? I would make it all one depth. It is just not worth it to slope it. Use a tape measure and see what depth you like the best. Also think about how deep your benches are. WHere do you want the water to hit when you are sitting on them? Hips? Tummy? Chest? Just over the shoulders? You could even do different depths on them as well.

My 10’ x 20’ pool is 4’2” all of the way across and it’s fantastic. I not only think the depth is perfect, but I love not having a slope. Any slope, to me, is uncomfortable/awkward to stand on. This is especially true for steep slopes. My friend had a pool with a steep slope and we always noticed that when lots of people were in the pool, they unconsciously avoided the sloped area and were either in the deep or shallow. This made the pool seem smaller due to less useable area.

My vote; split the difference and go 4’ all of the way across! This would be fine for a spa.
