Pool Build - California Dreaming - 3 Years Closer

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

I'll let you know what my PB comes up with for my 48" Fire Pit. He priced a Belgard Fire Pit kit for something stupid like $4,000 at Thompsons.
My cousin's step father gave me a burner he never used, it came off a commercial boiler and it is HUGE!

I'd like to do a automatic pilot/lighter system. Post a link to the Honeywell parts.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Something to think about re: these gas fire pits....do you live in an area that is windy ~all the time? We have maybe a 10 mph breeze just about every evening, and it's enough to blow out half of the flames. We end up just never using the pit :(

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Thanks all.

Melt in the Sun, is it the pilot light going off or just the flames from the burner?. The system I have in mind uses a hot surface ignitor; no flame to burn out, just hot nitride or carbide filament which can't be blown out or dowsed out unless submerged. BTW, they have a retrofit to replace the "spark" gas valve that is driving you nuts. Look into it and you will find yourself using the firepit more. :-D

I have a small breeze till the sun goes down. Had the same problem. What I did was screw some small sheet metal screws into about 10-15% of the holes in the inner ring of my dual rung burner. This increases the pressure to the remaining holes, and also forced more gas to the outer ring which was struggling. Works much better now.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Well I spent the weekend cleaning up much of the job site since I am no good at doing tile. I think I must have carted about 12 wheel barrow full of debris.

At the present point we are about 70% complete. Here are the remaining items to accomplish before fill.

1. Hook up equipment and electrical.
2. Install glass tile on bond beam (water line), spa (complete) and on stairs (2" strips).
3. Finish rock work / ledger stone on walls and columns.
4. Pour outer bond and coping.
5. Plumb sump pump in sunk-in patio.
6. Plaster pool and prep all drains, returns , suctions, etc.
7. Install light and fiber optic illuminators
8. Install safety fence and gates.
9. Construct stairs to sunk in patio.

If all goes as planned (and it rarely does when OB-ing), we are looking at a late May, early June pool fill.

Thanks for your interest and regards.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

In my prior posts I mentioned ordering glass tile direct from China. Unfortunately, as I compared different styles and materials, I noticed most of the "bargain" tiles from China are actually recycled glass which I have read is not recommended for the rigors of a pool environment. For reference, the mosaic tiles from China shipped to SoCal come in around $3.10 per sq ft.

I then looked at imported tile from Spain; these had a much better finish but were apt for flooring of the pool not necessarily the whole pool. Also, although a matter of taste, the iridescent quality was poor in my mind and light reflection was limited due to its very opaque nature. These come in around $5.00 per sq ft delivered to SoCal, presumably higher shipping due to need to transport from East coast to west coast.

Finally, I went back to scouring Craigslist. Luckily, I found some very good quality glass tile in three attractive colors from a store liquidation sale which was exactly what I was hoping to find at $2 per sq ft. Similar tile on line can be had for about $9 per sq ft. I have attached a picture of the three tiles.

The light blue/aqua iridescent tile will be the waterline tile and should contrast well with the quartz stone ledger on the bond beam and the peach color coping.

The dark blue iridescent or "peacock" will be used for the safety tile strip on the steps and anywhere else that needs a bold highlight.

The dark blue with gold streaks aka blue twilight are 3/4" tile and will be used to tile the entire spa except the entry step and the stools - these are nice and smooth.

To check that the tile can handle the heat of the spa, I soaked the tile in piping hot water for 4 hours to see if they would crack or shatter and none of the tiles showed any sign of failure.

Now my next challenge is to find someone with the knowledge and skill to install.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Here are a couple pictures of the current state of my pool build.

One picture is of the almost completed columns in the shallow end. The other is a picture of the raised bond beam with waterfalls installed. The third is a picture of the view of the entire pool from the deep end.

Thanks.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Here is a picture of the almost complete sunken patio. The grill and food prep area will be down there. The floor will be raised about a foot and will be covered with pavers.

The equipment pad or as I call it it "the runway" is complete. Considering the amount of machinery to be installed, we went ahead and poured this six inches thick. It's top dimensions measure about 14 ft by 4 ft. We just need to saw some cuts into it and we are ready to install the equipment.

Regards.

Hey fellow Gator! It's looking awesome - nice score on the tile! Can't wait to see it complete - How much longer do you figure until it's all done?

Did you watch UF and Butler Saturday? I was really disappointed the game played out as it did - we gave away a ticket to the final four... Great season in any event.

You'll be swimming before you know it... I'm happy for you and your family.
Go Gators!

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Thanks Nightmare - Yes we re-did the spa waterfall area and it now looks much better. The step down to the spa from the raised spa area is completely obstruction free as well. We also made sure both spill overs were the same sizes and angles. Lastly, we also centered the waterfall correctly. Better we caught it now then latter. Thanks for the tips.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

No-mas --- Horrible loss, but hey good season as you say. I am rooting for Butler now based on the way they play.

A couple posts earlier I listed all that is left. It is a matter of money now; two months and $10K and we are swimming. It seems an eternity away however. Thanks for the well wishes and the complements. Go Gators.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Well I am sorry to say that our pre-deck inspection failed. I assumed that the inspector who came previously and advised me on how to install the equipotential bonding wire would have the respect and acknowledgement of his peers. Instead I got a different inspector who visited the job site when I was away who had his own take on the NEC rules on perimeter bonding. As instructed and per NEC I ran a single copper bare 8awg wire and bond clamped it to the pool shell at 4 points equi-distant around the pool and buried it 4 to 6" deep. The inspector told the wifey it had to be Rebar extending three feet around perimeter and left. I asked her if she informed we are not pouring the deck but installing Pavers. Unfortunately, she said he left as fast as he got there. Anyway I rescheduled the inspection and hopefully armed with copies of the regs I can convince the next guy that the way we did it is suitable for Pavers and satisfies the code. Frustrating....

Anyway I was checking out outdoor kitchen equipment and saw something very cool, a kegerator - now that would calm me down

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Spillmar,

that is frustrating when inspectors say one thing and another one comes out and expects something different. We are getting our pre-deck inspection on Wednesday. Hopefully it goes smooth. Your pool is looking great. I need to come by sometime and see it in person.
The bar is looking quite amazing.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Thanks ccp

You're welcome to swing by. I went ahead and rescheduled the pre-deck inspection for tomorrow hoping his time I will be told what the deal is and how to reconcile the flag. I hope the original inspector who told me to bury the single ring of copper this way shows up this time. Cheers..

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

This weekend I pulled the last remaining electrical power feed; the hardest for last - 300 ft of two 2 AWG and two 4 AWG for the 100 amp subpanel near the equipment. That was one heavy cable.

Once I clean the lubricant gook off my hands, I will be ready to take on the world champion at tug of war. :-D

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Well it felt like winning the lottery when I openend the door today and low and behold the original inspector was standing before me. I immediately felt a huge relief and I knew then I would get my pre-deck approval. It felt good knowing that I now did not have to unnecessarily spend $2k in copper mesh.

A small victory but one nonetheless. Now I can proceed intently with the installation of the deck and move the project closer toward the fill date. Best regards.
