Pool Alarms

Sad to say you are not going to find any in pool alarms with good reviews.

Yes they work but since they work they tend to generate false alarms. Just like home door alarms, good idea but too many false alarms to be used by normal folks.

I would put an alarm on the doors leading out to the pool and on the windows. I would also put in a keyed dead bolt on the doors and take the keys OUT!

To go one step further..........can you gate/fence off the patio so they will be slowed down heading to the pool.

How old are the kids?

Take and share a pic of your set up. Someone may have some ideas.

Kim,

Thank you for the ideas. I like the idea of a dead bolt with key access only. I also found flip locks that can be attached to door frame high so my kids cannot reach them. My kids are 3 and 1 years old. Very active. The oldest is currently in swim lessons at our local YMCA but I'm still very concerned about doing all I can to make sure a tragedy doesn't happen. I have read so many horror stories about kids drowning.

High up may not be high enough...........think chairs being pushed to the door and the little monkeys kids climbing up it.

Did you know some places offer baby classes? They teach them to flip on their backs and holler for help! It may be harder to find but would be well worth it! I helped with my niece when she was 4 months old. She still loves to swim to this day. She just turned 33!

What Kim is referring to is called Infant-Swim Rescue (ISR) survival training. It's a very specialized form of swim training and instructors must be certified in it for it to be ISR. It is quite incredible and I have witnessed it myself firsthand - an 18 month old baby literally dropped in the deep end of the pool rolled over on her back with arms spread out and kick-swam herself to edge of the pool coping. She then grabbed the coping and held tight. No freaking out or crying or hysteria, just calm and simple swimming. It's incredible to see.

Here's what I did - I have the standard pool safety fence (self-latching/self-closing, proper height, width, etc, etc). I also happen to have a home alarm system and I set it to beep every time a door/window/entry is open (pretty standard feature). All of the doors that lead out to my yard have what are called "pool code" dead-bolts. In addition to normal handle and dead-bolt lock set at the usual height, there is a second deadbolt set 30" from the top of the door frame. It is high enough so that only a child of ~ 8 years of age could reach it. Sure, my mischievous 4 year old could try to move a chair over to it, but he'd be caught well before ever reaching the door.

Other than that, it's swim lessons for the kids every year until they reach about 6 years old or so and I'm confident they can swim and tread water.

Thank you both so much for the help. I want an alarm to do the same exact thing you have. What is the name of the alarm system you have, Joyfulnoise?

I just have your basic home security package from ADT. Nothing fancy, just window and door alarms. The audible beep when a sensor is triggered is just a setting on the keypad for when I'm at home and want to be aware that a window or door is open. It's different from the alarm sound that would be triggered if the system were armed and active. I can turn it on or off. Most basic home security systems should have that option.

Another option is to have home automation deadbolt. Set it to auto lock. Even with a deadbolt, it require someone to lock it. We have 5 doors in the back of our house accessing the pool and have automation keeping the deadbolts shut.
