No need to cut a large piece out if the damage is contained to a small area. You just need healthy pipe on either end, the 2 couplers and clamps. Exposing a couple feet of pipe both ways will help you bend the patch piece in there.
Irrigation pipe clamp pliers are cheap $15(?) but I prefer standard issue pipe clamps and I use my impact gun to tighten them.
A little bit of dish soap will help the coupler slide right in. Make sure it's fully seated on both sides. Clamp the barbs, not the smooth pipe past them if it seats itself all the way in there.
