That looks like part of your natural gas line feeding the heater. I think stubs like that are used to capture any moisture or condensation in the NG line.
Or maybe they plumbed it to be able to extend the NG line to a grill or some other device.
I think that’s PVC pipe, not gas piping. It looks like an extra line that used to go somewhere and is not capped off. That piece next to the filter looks like a check valve, but being capped it’s obviously not used any more.
Yes it’s a water PVC line teed off the return from the heater going to some kind of valve and then capped off. Wondering if I can just remove it but no clue what it was used for before or if it has some purpose.
