Hello, does anyone know why I need this part of the plumbing coming off the heater? See red lines. Is capped off just after the wide piece.
Thanks

That looks like part of your natural gas line feeding the heater. I think stubs like that are used to capture any moisture or condensation in the NG line.

Or maybe they plumbed it to be able to extend the NG line to a grill or some other device.

I think that’s PVC pipe, not gas piping. It looks like an extra line that used to go somewhere and is not capped off. That piece next to the filter looks like a check valve, but being capped it’s obviously not used any more.

I am used to seeing gas lines as black pipe.
