We are in the process of choosing a heater for our new above ground pool. I have questions about the Hayward Universal H-Series Low NOx Induced Draft Pool & Spa Heater | 250,000 BTU | Natural Gas | H250FDN. Can this heater be outside in the elements of weather? Does it damage it if in rain/snow? Is it okay if heater is placed under a deck?

Yes these units can sit outside in the rain and snow. Do not place them under a pool deck. The manual states that they should be placed outdoors unobstructed. If you had to put it in some sort of enclosure, they recommend that you add a stack to it to help exhaust it properly. For winter use, some folks disconnect and take in a garage or you can get a cover for it such as a BBQ grill over or even a blue tarp. Secure it down and you're good to go. Keep in mind though it does make a nice house for mice so put some mothballs inside before wrapping it up.

Personally, I would look at the Raypak units over the Hayward. Much simpler design and no extra parts that can break and need repair down the road. If you do some searching here on this site you will see the issues people have with the Hayward's.

Low Nox models are a requirement in some states if I'm not mistaken but that has more to do with
indoor installations. Cupro nickel is a waste of money upgrade and won't necessarily last any longer
than a standard heat exchanger.

I just swapped out an old Laars lite2 for a Raypak and very pleased with it.

I would think the 206 btu Raypak should heat your pool quite quickly.

I have the 266 btu unit and it heats my pool nearly 2 degrees per hour.

Keep in mind that if you buy online and install yourself, you will not be able to take advantage of the warranty. Although in MI a year of service is only really about 4-5 months of use.
