PH level before the SLAM

Yeah im thinking cartridge might be the way to go. DE requires a lot hassle to recharge and clean. But I see that it's def the best filtering agent.

Yeah laterals looked fine when I replaced the sand. I filled the filter housing with water before adding sand so not sure if it would of damaged adding sand.

Got in the pool to vacuum since my pool is still cloudy on the bottom 12"s or so. Noticed a lot of sand on the floor. Sucked up a lot which was caught by a pantyhose in the slimmer. About 1-1/2 cups. Suction was lost so that what made me check. Turned the filter back on felt sand hitting me. Stood in front of the return with the vacuum constantly sucking up sand. Til I finally put another piece of panty hose over return jet. And was catching sand...so I'm looking into investing in a different filter.

If sand is returning back to the pool via the return jet, your sand is calcified. Open up your sand filter and skim off the top layer of sand. You may need to replace it but they say sand in your filter should last anywhere from 5-10 years. I don't know how true that is. I'm kinda new at this as well. But I'd hate to see you spend more money on replacing your filter when you might only need to replace the sand.

I wonder if you need to deep clean it again? You just cleared a pretty major algae bloom. I'm wondering your filter media isn't all plugged up with dead algae and possibly deep channeled. Also, with the high FC, you may have degraded an o-ring somewhere.

Up for another filter tear down ?

Just wanting better filtration. I'll end selling all this stuff on craigslist and make some money back so not a total lost. I bought this pool with pump and filter for $500 off craigslist 3 years ago. So not too bad a loss when seeing it from that point of view. But I might look to repairing it. I've spent this much time on it so far what's a little more lol

Based on what you paid for the pool, a new cartridge filter would easily cost as much ;)

Yup, I'd say check the filter again. You might have a broken lateral or a busted o-ring somewhere. Also, you can check the spider gasket in the multiport to make sure it is broken somewhere.

Ya know, cuz you got all the time in the world to track down gremlins in your filter :p

Yeah, rattling is never a good sign. Hopefully something is just loose but it sounds like you're in need of replacing the sand filter or opening it up and performing some surgery. If dirty water is mixing with good water somehow, you might never get rid of the cloudiness :(

Trying the surgery today...I'm thinking its a lateral. The sand filter has kept the pool clear the last few years so I know it works just need to get this pool clear. Hate spinning wheels and not getting anywhere

Good luck doctor! I hope the patient makes a full recovery.

Well went to the pool store and got "pool stored" by the summer help. Told them I had e series Hayward sand filter...looked in there book for 5 minutes and gave me the new lateral "for my filter".

I didn't take it apart prior since I didn't want to stop my SLAM... ShOuld have though since I got back with my pool part around 3:00pm. Had daughter turn pump off and switch to waste with backwash hose attached to drain it down so I can do a quick swap... Everything was going according to plan, took the filter down and sand out in less than. 15 minutes. BUT here was the kicker:

Can you see the difference!? Smh

So they close at 2 on Sunday so when I realized the issue they were gone and pump hasn't been running since daughter shut it off .

POOL STOREd woes

I was thinking about cutting the pvc to fit since I like the longer laterals figured they would in crease flow but not sure if would be an issue for filtering... And didn't want to get stuck with a cut up part

Ugh. What a pain! I have heard of people cutting the stand pipe shorter but it doesn't seem like those much longer laterals could fit in a filter that started out with such short ones! I don't know enough to really have any meaningful input on that though.

Try to keep your FC at SLAM level though. You'll just have to manually "stir" the pool after you add bleach. Another pain but probably better than losing a lot of ground!

Good luck with the pool store!
