ph high

From what I understand, pH is on a logarithmic scale. Generally, your pool will rise from 7.2-7.6 faster than it will from 7.6 to 7.8. Anything below 8.0 is ok, so if your pool tends to hover well at 7.8, stop fighting it and let it hover. I test pH daily when I test chlorine. When it finally reaches 8.0, I'll add acid to drop it to around 7.4 or so, and then let it come up again. Fighting it down to 7.2 and trying to hold it there may be counterproductive if your pool just likes 7.8 or so. :)

How long does it take for your pool to go from 7.2 to 8.0?

thanks for your input! i haven't let ph reach 8.0 since right after i started this post. i've been checking it daily (lately it's been around 7.6-7.8) and adding muriatic acid each day to bring it back down to 7.2; my TA is now at 70 so i'll take your suggestion and just see if ph will maintain around 7.8. but, the problem i'm up against now is needing to add water which my fill water has TA 260. so, i'll probably need to make some more adjustments over the next few days but once i get my TA back down to 70 or so; i'll see how my ph reacts.

Sounds good! It's ok to add acid to take it to 7.4 or 7.6. Track your acid adds over time and see if you add less (and less often) trying to drop it to 7.6 instead of fighting it down to 7.2 every time. That said, you will definitely be fighting higher TA with that fill water (I fight this too) so it may just be a fact of life.

thanks triptyx!

I would try to get your ta lower, 50-60, and/or just hit it to 7.6 instead of 7.2

thanks; another said the same thing about targeting 7.6 instead of the 7.2

I'm not sure if this is "TFP-cheating" or not, but this helps me in my battle against pH rise. After not too long you'll find yourself adding pretty much the same amount of MA (though it my change a bit by the season). So you just add that amount each day, or double that amount every other day, and test less often. See if you can extend your testing frequency a bit, and make this less of a chore. You might get to where you dose every other day, and test every fourth day, or sixth day. On test day, you reset your pH to whatever "standard" level you've settled on, then start the 4- or 6-day cycle again. Your total "task" time will be a bit lower. Same for chlorine. You become your own "automatic" dosing machine, and test just often enough to keep it from getting too far out of whack.

And if you've got any kooky in ya, you can come up with something that makes dosing a breeze. This is where I shamelessly plug my Save-a-Deck® system:

post #97 of my zany thread Getting ready for SWG

While I got a little carried away, my quest was to find a fast, easy and safe way to dispense MA, which is shaping up to be a life-long chore for me and my pool.

You could do something similar, with a piece of wood and a measuring cup, if the idea strikes your fancy... I'll only need a small licensing fee if you do so! ;)
